Independent thermal roof surveys in Tatling End

Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Tatling End

A thermal survey can point to places where heat is escaping through the roof. Missing or slipped insulation and gaps at the eaves often show up as temperature differences. The difference shows most clearly when it is warm inside and cold outside. Our report points out what the images suggest and where to look more closely. It is not an energy rating or a heat loss calculation. Typical surveys look at patches of heat loss across the roof and damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys, on pitched roof slopes, insulated roof spaces and commercial roofs.

Somewhere as small as Tatling End, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what cannot be reached safely. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.

We write the report in plain English, so you do not need to be a roofer to follow it. Each point is backed by a photo where possible, and recommendations are put by urgency where it matters.

What we do, step by step

The visit normally starts outside and finishes in the loft: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the roof space where it can be reached. In total, it takes between one and two hours at most homes, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Around Tatling End, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it’s safe.

  1. We talk through the roof, any damp or leaks, and the weather expected on the day.
  2. We carry out a visual inspection of the roof from wherever it can safely be seen.
  3. A thermal camera records how the surface temperature varies across the roof.
  4. Areas that look unusual on the camera are checked with moisture readings where possible.
  5. You get a report with thermal images, photographs and our recommendations.

Questions from Tatling End

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Tatling End?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.

Are there drone restrictions around Tatling End?

Typically it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Tatling End is about 2 miles from Denham Aerodrome, so the Drone Safety Map is checked for restrictions around it before we fly. Strong wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying, and the rest of the survey doesn’t depend on the drone.

How long does the survey take?

Expect it to take about one to two hours on an ordinary house, and longer for a large or complex roof. The written report follows by email.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

It depends on what we need to see. Inside the building and in the loft, we need someone to let us in, while outside access can be discussed as you book.

Is thermal imaging good for finding leaks?

It often helps show where to look. Water can travel under a covering before it shows inside, and temperature patterns can help follow it. We combine it with a visual inspection and moisture readings because the camera can’t confirm water on its own.

What happens next?

The report comes by email, and you decide the next step: use it with a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent.

Are you structural engineers?

No. We note visible signs like sagging or deflection, but we don’t carry out calculations or give an engineer’s opinion. Where an engineer is needed, we say so in the report.

Airspace, weather and Tatling End roofs

Tatling End is about 2 miles from Denham Aerodrome. If the drone is used for your survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying. About 4 miles east lies Ickenham Hall, a reminder of how long the area around Tatling End has been built on. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.

If you look after a building such as The Gerrards Cross CofE School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit. For businesses in and around places such as The Pavilions, a commercial roof can be photographed from above without anyone walking on it. Take an older house close to St James Church: thin or patchy insulation under an old roof frequently shows up clearly on a thermal image.

How the survey changes by roof type

Loft insulation

The difference is clearest when the home is heated and it’s cold out. We explain in the report how the conditions on the day affected what we saw.

Parapets, valleys and junctions

Problems where roof slopes and walls meet are often hidden. A careful visual inspection goes alongside the images.

Tips that help

Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out as worth the effort:

  • Remember the conditions on the day affect the results
  • Note where damp appears and after what weather
  • Keep outlets and gutters clear to stop water sitting
  • Move stored items away from the loft hatch

If the images suggest moisture that cannot be confirmed, we will say what would help next, such as electronic leak detection or opening up a small area.

Clear outlets and gutters regularly, so water does not sit on the roof. Less standing water means less chance of it getting under the covering.

DIY checks: what’s safe

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and falls from height are serious. That is where a survey comes in.

You can learn a lot from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.

Leave it or get it looked at?

A poorly insulated roof loses heat year after year. The camera can point to gaps and thin areas in the insulation, so improvements can go where they’re needed. For older village homes like those around Tatling End, the right replacement materials are not always easy to find quickly. That is one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.

Prices start from £400, including VAT. Packages run from Basic at £150 through Standard at £250 to Premium at £400, inc. VAT.

What we cannot see

A survey is a proper look at the roof, but it can’t do everything. Its limits include:

  • Hidden layers that need to be opened up to check
  • Confirming water without moisture readings
  • Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
