Tide Mills Thermal Roof Survey
Know where you stand with the roof before you spend money on it. We carry out thermal roof surveys in Tide Mills, with photographs and a clear written report.
- Leaks that are hard to trace
- Thin or uneven insulation in the roof
- Damp patches with no obvious cause
Before and after the survey
A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:
- Do not climb onto the roof to look for leaks yourself
- Check outlets after heavy rain
- Clear a path to the loft hatch before we arrive
- Talk to us about the weather when booking
After the visit, we put the thermal images, photographs and moisture readings into one report. Each image is explained in plain words, alongside what we recommend. With a Premium Survey, you get the report the same day.
Keep outlets and gutters clear so water drains off the roof quickly. The less water sits, the less can find its way beneath.
About our thermal roof survey in Tide Mills
Thermal imaging can also show where a roof is losing heat. Gaps in loft insulation and poorly insulated areas can stand out on the images. It works best when the building is heated and it’s colder outside. Our report points out what the images suggest and where to look more closely. We do not give energy ratings or heat loss calculations. We survey pitched roof slopes, ceilings below the roof and insulated roof spaces, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are patches of heat loss across the roof and cold spots on ceilings under the roof.
In a village or hamlet like Tide Mills, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what cannot be reached safely. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
Nothing in the report is left vague: if work is needed, the report says so clearly, along with how urgent it is.

What a thermal roof survey doesn’t cover
Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:
- Whether the deck or roof structure is strong enough
- Reliable images in rain, strong wind or on a wet roof surface
- Hidden layers that need to be opened up to check

Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Tide Mills
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Tide Mills?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Will you come out to Tide Mills?
Yes. Tide Mills is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We survey roofs across London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
How quickly is the report sent?
Each package has its own report time. Basic is within 48 hours, Standard is 24–48 hours and Premium is the same day. Mention any deadline when booking.
Does the report include photographs?
Yes. The report includes photos of what we found, so you can see each point for yourself.
Can you survey at the weekend?
Surveys run on any day of the week. To find a day that suits you, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.
Does someone need to be in?
Not necessarily. If we only need the outside, we can agree that in advance, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.
For landlords and managing agents
Landlords, agents and building managers in Tide Mills and across East Sussex can book any of our surveys. To discuss a property or a block, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email.
Where a roof is shared: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you get in touch and we’ll plan the survey around it.
What we look for on each type of roof
Felt and asphalt flat roofs
These coverings sit directly on the layers beneath, so temperature differences often show through. Any patterns are checked with moisture readings.
Parapets, valleys and junctions
Water often gets in where roofs meet walls, parapets or valley gutters. Thermal imaging can help show damp patterns around them.
Can I check my roof myself?
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.
The survey, step by step
On the day, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that is worrying you. We then inspect everything that can safely be seen, from the ground, from windows, in the loft space and by drone where it applies. The survey normally takes about 1–2 hours for most houses; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. Around Tide Mills, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it helps to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it is safe.
- First we go over the roof, the problem you’ve noticed and the conditions forecast for the visit.
- We look at the roof from the ground, from windows and from the roof itself where it’s safe.
- We take thermal images of the roof to pick up temperature patterns.
- We check the patterns that stand out with moisture readings where there’s safe access.
- The report sets out the images, what they suggest and what we recommend.
How to prepare
- Note where any stains or damp appear
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work

What a thermal roof survey looks like in Tide Mills
The coast is about 1 mile or less from Tide Mills, and wind off the sea can be strong. Calm, dry conditions after a sunny day suit thermal imaging best, so the visit is planned around the forecast. There are several hotels within about a mile and a half of Tide Mills, and like offices and blocks, hotels often sit under flat roofs. If you look after one, a large roof can be surveyed without guests having anyone working above them.
If you look after a building such as UTC@Harbourside, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. If you run a hotel or guest house in or near Tide Mills, a roof problem can mean rooms out of use, so it pays to find faults before guests do. If your house is among the older ones in the streets near Church of St Andrew, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that is where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps.
