Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Wiston
A thermal camera can help when the cause of damp is not obvious. Water can travel some distance under a roof covering before it shows inside, and temperature patterns can help us trace where it may have come from. The images are used alongside a visual inspection and moisture readings, so the findings do not rely on the camera alone. We survey ceilings below the roof, loft conversions and flat roofs, and the problems we are asked to look at most are moisture around outlets and upstands and gaps in loft insulation.
Somewhere as small as Wiston, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Weather and airspace are looked at ahead of the visit. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.
Where we can’t see part of the roof, the report says so. You’ll know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t.

Common roof problems in Wiston
After a repair, some owners want to know whether the roof has dried out. A thermal survey with moisture readings can show whether wet areas remain when the conditions on the day are suitable.
Here are some of the things we see often:
- Leaks that are hard to trace
- Damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys
- Cold areas below the roof
- Gaps in loft insulation
The streets around a church such as All Saints Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that is where a view from the air or with a thermal camera helps.

Honest limits
Our survey isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:
- Whether the deck or roof structure is strong enough
- Hidden layers that need to be opened up to check
- A formal energy assessment

FAQs for Wiston
Is Wiston in the area you cover?
Yes, Wiston is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs.
Will you come out to Wiston?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our area covers London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.
How experienced are you?
We have more than 20 years’ experience and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, as long as access is agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is often shared, so the building owner or managing agent needs to agree access. We inspect only the parts we are allowed to reach.
Is thermal imaging useful on pitched roofs?
It can be useful, though pitched roofs are normally harder to read. The air space under slates and tiles can hide patterns, so we combine it with an inspection from the loft where there’s safe access.
Can you check my loft insulation with a thermal camera?
Gaps and thin areas of insulation can show up on the camera. It shows most clearly when it is warm inside and cold outside. Where we can reach the loft safely, we check there too.
What do I do with the report?
The report arrives by email, with photographs and clear recommendations. With Standard there’s a follow-up consultation; with Premium, an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.
Should I look at the roof myself first?
A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
What happens on the day
We don’t take risks to get a closer look. Everything that can safely be seen is inspected, and anything we can’t see is noted in the report. The survey usually takes between one and two hours on an ordinary house, and longer for a large or complex roof. Somewhere like Wiston needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view, inside and out.
- We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
- The weather and surface conditions are recorded.
- A full inspection and thermal imaging are carried out together.
- Moisture readings are used to check what the camera shows.
- You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.
Before we arrive
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Note where any stains or damp appear

Thermal roof surveys around Wiston
Many older homes in Sussex have handmade clay tiles and tile-hung walls. A few old Sussex buildings still carry heavy Horsham stone slabs. Steep or complicated roofs are often hard to see from ground level, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help. Where the drone is part of the survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.

Tips that help
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Tips:
- Clear a path to the loft hatch before we arrive
- Heat the home normally on the days before
- Use the report as a baseline for later checks
- Note where damp appears and after what weather
If the images suggest moisture that can’t be confirmed, we will say what would help next, for example electronic leak detection or a roofer opening up a small section.
Check loft insulation covers the whole area and hasn’t been disturbed. Insulation is often moved when people work in the roof space.
