What we’re asked to look at in Whitehall

After a long-running leak, insulation under a flat roof can stay wet. Knowing how much of the roof is affected helps decide between a local repair and more. Thermal images and moisture readings together can show the likely extent.

Common reasons to book include:

  • Cold areas below the roof
  • Missing or slipped insulation
  • Heat escaping through the roof
  • Moisture around outlets and upstands

For an older house near a landmark like The Church of St Mary the Virgin, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • How they plan to inspect the roof safely
  • Whether VAT is added on top
  • What experience they bring

What a good roof survey covers

Thermal roof survey in Whitehall

Your report sets out the thermal images alongside ordinary photographs, making it clear where on the roof each pattern is. Each one comes with an explanation, the moisture readings and our recommendation. With a Premium Survey, the report reaches you the same day. If you have questions, the in-person consultation gives you time to go through them. There is a 12-month follow-up as well. If you’ve noticed water that travels before it shows and thin or uneven insulation in the roof, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on flat roofs, ceilings below the roof and pitched roof slopes alike.

In a small place like Whitehall, open ground can mean strong wind. High wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Landlord and commercial surveys in Whitehall

With a portfolio of properties, surveys can be booked for more than one address. To arrange surveys for several addresses, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email.

For a freeholder or residents’ company, a roof report is a sound basis for a maintenance plan.

Roof by roof

Single-ply and EPDM roofs

Single-ply PVC, TPO and EPDM roofs are often laid over insulation boards. If water gets under them, thermal imaging can suggest which boards are wet.

Pitched slate and tile roofs

Slate and tile roofs are often harder to read with a thermal camera, because of the air space beneath. We back up what the camera shows with a look in the loft where we can.

What happens on the day

Where it is relevant and can be reached safely, the roof space is checked as well as the outside. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. All in, the survey typically takes about 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. In a small place like Whitehall, access is normally the main thing to plan. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Weekday and weekend visits are available.

  1. We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
  2. We look over the roof from wherever it is safe.
  3. Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there is safe access, in the loft.
  4. Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
  5. The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.

Why act early in Whitehall

Buyers get extra information from thermal images that the eye can miss. Hidden problems found before exchange can be raised with the seller or agent. In a small place like Whitehall, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.

Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where it applies) come with the Premium Survey, which starts from £400, including VAT. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.

What you get with us

  • Over 5,000 surveys carried out
  • Satisfaction rate of 98%

Thermal roof surveys in Whitehall: local notes

If your survey includes the drone, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying. There are about 500,000 buildings on England’s list of listed buildings, and around 10,000 conservation areas. If your home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission, so the council is the place to ask.

If you look after a building such as Shipley CofE Primary School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

Whitehall: your questions answered

Do you cover Whitehall?

Yes, Whitehall is within the area we cover. We cover the whole of London and South East England. You can ring 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and a few details.

Will you come out to Whitehall?

Yes. Whitehall is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our area covers London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

Are you insured?

We are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.

Does thermal imaging work on slate and tile roofs?

It can show heat loss and some damp, but it has more limits there. Our report is clear about what can be read from them, and we check them with a visual inspection and moisture readings.

Does someone need to be in?

Not necessarily. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.

Is it a structural engineer’s report?

No. Our survey isn’t a structural engineer’s report, and it does not include calculations. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we will recommend one.

What’s in the report?

Written findings with photos, explaining the condition of the roof, any defects and our recommendations. The Standard Survey adds moisture detection and a structural check, and the Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies and structural analysis.
