Duddleswell Chimney Survey
Independent chimney surveys in Duddleswell. More than 5,000 surveys completed across London and South East England.
- Damaged chimney pots and cowls
- Mortar washing out of the joints
- Unused flues sealed without airflow
Should I look at the roof myself first?
A lot can be seen from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.
Chimney survey in Duddleswell
A chimney survey is about the outside of the stack and the roof around it. It isn’t a flue inspection, a sweep or a gas safety check. For the flue itself, you’ll need a sweep or, for gas appliances, a Gas Safe registered engineer. We’ll tell you if we see anything that suggests they should take a look. If you’ve noticed disused chimneys trapping moisture and spalled or crumbling bricks, we can find out what’s behind it.
Some older homes in villages like Duddleswell are listed or in a conservation area. If yours is, re-roofing in different materials may need consent, so the council is the place to check. Knowing the roof’s condition helps you plan ahead with that in mind. Older materials such as clay tiles, slate and stone are often matched when work is done.
Findings are set out part by part, from the coverings down to the gutters. It records what’s sound as well as what isn’t.

Duddleswell questions
Will you come out to Duddleswell?
Yes, Duddleswell is covered. We survey roofs across London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.
Can a landlord with a rental near Buxted station book a roof survey?
Yes, rented property is part of what we cover. Just call 07833 053749 or email us and let us know about the building.
Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?
No. We’re experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.
What will the report tell me?
It sets out what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, with photographs throughout. It also says if any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, so you know exactly what was covered.
Which parts of the chimney do you look at?
The survey covers the pots and cowls, the flaunching, the pointing, the bricks and the flashings. Inside, we look for damp on chimney breasts and in the loft where there’s safe access. You get a written report with photos.
Can you inspect my roof with a drone?
Where it’s applicable and safe, yes. We are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. It’s included in the Drone Roof Survey and, where it applies, the Premium Survey.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Not unless it’s safe. Safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where it applies cover most of what’s needed, and the report notes anything we couldn’t see.
What we cannot see
We only report what can be seen safely on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:
- Whether the flue is safe to use
- A structural engineer’s assessment
- Checks on boilers, fires or their flues

How it works
A survey visit follows a simple order: we listen to what’s been worrying you, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photographs as we go and record our findings for the written report. It typically takes between one and two hours at a house, as part of a look at the roof around the stack. Cottages and farmhouses around Duddleswell often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints.
- You tell us whether any stacks are shared, unused or leaning.
- We check the roof around each stack, including the flashings.
- We look at the flaunching and pots on every stack.
- Any lean, spalling or worn pointing is recorded.
- You receive a written report setting out what needs attention first.
Before we arrive
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch
- Tell us about parking before the day
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at

Duddleswell homes and their roofs
Many older homes in Sussex have handmade clay tiles and tile-hung walls. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old Sussex buildings, alongside oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters. Listing and conservation areas can both shape what roof work is allowed on an older home. The council is the place to check, along with Historic England’s list.
Whatever the street in Duddleswell, a roof costs least to look after when faults are caught early. If you own a rental within reach of Buxted station, a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak.

Useful tips for Duddleswell property owners
Small things make a difference, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Some pointers:
- Book a sweep for flues that are in use
- Remove aerials or dishes from the stack if they’re no longer needed
- Keep track of stains on chimney breasts
- Look at the chimneys with binoculars after a storm
The report is emailed to you, ready to share with a roofer or builder. We use plain English and a photo for each defect so anyone reading it can see what we saw.
Check your stacks from the street or garden after a storm. With binoculars, you can often see cracked flaunching or lifted lead.
