How a chimney survey works in Frogmore
Our chimney survey covers the stack and the details that keep water out around it: pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing, bricks and the flashings at the roof line. Inside, we check chimney breasts and the stack in the loft where it is safe to reach. You get a written report with photographs and our recommendations. We survey single stacks on houses and groups of stacks on bigger buildings. Typical surveys look at disused chimneys trapping moisture and frost-damaged brickwork on the stack, on flaunching, brick chimney stacks and chimney breasts.
In a small place like Frogmore, many roofs stand in the open, so ridges, chimney stacks, flashings and gutters work hard. Damp in old walls is slow to dry, so a small leak can do a lot of harm. A written report sets out what to deal with and in what order. Lead flashings and old chimney stacks are often where weather gets in first.
You receive the findings by email, ready to forward to whoever needs them. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

The survey, step by step
We will ask a few questions first, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. The inspection then takes about 1–2 hours at most homes, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. Around Frogmore, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- You tell us how many stacks there are and any damp or problems you’ve noticed.
- We inspect each stack from safe viewpoints outside.
- The pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing, brickwork and flashings are checked and photographed.
- Inside, we look for damp on chimney breasts and in the loft where there is safe access.
- The findings are written up with photos and recommendations and emailed to you.
Before we arrive
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch
- Note where any stains or damp appear
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices

What you can safely check yourself
A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey.
Signs you need a chimney survey in Frogmore
Some owners book because a chimney breast has been removed below and they want to know about the stack above. We note what’s visible in the roof space and outside, and the report recommends a structural engineer if support is a concern.
It is worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:
- Flashings pulling away from the stack
- Disused chimneys trapping moisture
- A chimney out of line
- Spalled or crumbling bricks
For an older house near a landmark such as Church of the Holy Trinity, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs.
Before you book any roof surveyor
- Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
- Whether VAT is added on top
- How long they’ve been surveying roofs
- What’s outside the scope of the survey

Local roofs in Frogmore
Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles, and flat-roofed additions turn up almost everywhere. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look. Historic houses such as High Elms Manor, about 2.8 miles south-west, show how far back building in the area around Frogmore goes. On older houses around here, roofs frequently carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for instance near The Maltings, a written record of the roof’s condition helps you plan maintenance rather than react to leaks. Anyone responsible for a site like Park Street Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School will know that large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other.

Frogmore questions
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Frogmore?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Do you survey roofs for landlords with property near How Wood station?
Yes, rented property is part of what we cover. You can ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and some details, including who will give access on the day.
Can you survey at the weekend?
Visits run seven days a week in the daytime, which suits people who work during the week. Let us know your preferred days when you book.
Do you inspect the flue?
No. We survey the stack and its weathering, not the flue. The flue should be checked by a sweep, or by a Gas Safe registered engineer for gas appliances.
How experienced are you?
More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years.
How do you inspect a chimney without scaffolding?
We look from ground level, from windows and from the loft where it is safe. Where it applies, our Premium Survey adds a drone inspection for a closer view. Any area we couldn’t view is noted.
Do I need to be at home?
That depends on the survey. For inside areas and the roof space, someone has to give us access, while outside access can be discussed when booking.

Different roofs, different checks
Lead flashings
Lead flashings seal the joint between the stack and the roof. The survey looks at whether the lead is tight, sound and well fixed.
Chimney breasts and the loft
In the loft, staining around the stack often shows where water is getting in. We record what we see with photos.
