FAQs for New Street

I let a flat near Meopham station. Can you check the roof?

Yes. We survey roofs for landlords, letting agents and managing agents as well as owners. Just call 07833 053749 or send us an email with the details, and we’ll talk through which survey suits.

Is New Street within the area you cover?

Yes. New Street is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our area covers London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

How do you inspect a chimney without scaffolding?

We inspect from wherever is safe: the ground, nearby windows and higher points, and the loft space. Our Premium Survey includes a drone inspection where it applies. We note anything we couldn’t see.

How soon will I get the report?

Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24–48 hours and Premium reports on the same day. All of them come by email.

Do you inspect the flue?

No. Our survey covers the outside of the stack and the roof around it. For the flue, you will need a sweep or, for gas, a Gas Safe registered engineer.

How long is the visit?

Expect it to take between one and two hours at a house, as part of a look at the roof around the stack. You will then get the report by email.

My chimney looks like it’s leaning. What should I do?

A leaning stack should be looked at. We record the lean, the brickwork and the pointing, and if it may be a structural issue, we recommend a structural engineer.

Chimney survey in New Street

On terraced and semi-detached houses, a chimney stack is often shared with next door. We inspect the parts we can see safely and the parts the owner gives us access to. Where a problem seems to involve a neighbour’s side, the report records it, so you can talk to them. Everything is written up with photos and what we recommend. We survey chimney pots and cowls, chimney breasts and shared and party-wall stacks, and people most frequently book us about bricks with flaking faces and gaps where the stack meets the roof.

Older buildings in small places like New Street may be listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials can be used when work is done, so check with the council before planning anything. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Older materials like clay tiles, slate and stone are often matched when work is done.

With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Can I check my roof myself?

You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

How it works

You don’t need to do much on the day. Point out anything you’ve noticed, such as stains, drips or loose pieces, and we’ll get on with the inspection. A typical survey takes an hour or two for most homes, a little longer where there are several stacks. Somewhere as small as New Street, access is frequently the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Weekday and weekend visits are available.

  1. First you let us know about the chimneys, any damp on the chimney breasts and any worries.
  2. The stacks are looked at from ground level, from windows and from other safe vantage points.
  3. We check and photograph the pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing and flashings.
  4. Inside, we look for damp on chimney breasts and in the loft where there’s safe access.
  5. We send a written report with photos, the defects found and what we recommend.

Preparing for the visit

  • Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at
  • Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch

What this survey can’t tell you

Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:

  • Checks on boilers, fires or their flues
  • Hidden sides of a shared stack
  • Hidden damage within the stack

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will tell you. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Chimney pots and cowls
  • Flaunching
  • Shared and party-wall stacks
  • Brick chimney stacks
  • Lead flashings
  • Chimney breasts

Surveys can also be booked by buyers’ agents acting for a client. The report is emailed, so it can go straight to your client, photos included.

If the property is let, the agent or a tenant can let us in. Surveys run seven days a week, which can make access easier.

Leave it or get it looked at?

If you’re thinking of removing or reducing a stack, it’s useful to know its condition first. In a conservation area or on a listed building, changes may need permission from the council and the council can advise. Around New Street, older homes often have old roof timbers, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it’s left.

Do you need a chimney survey in New Street?

Chimney stacks stand above the roof, exposed to wind, rain and frost on every side. Frost opens up cracks in the mortar, and rain gets into worn bricks and joints. People typically call us when they notice damp or a problem with the stack, or before a purchase.

Most people get in touch after spotting something like this:

  • Spalled or crumbling bricks
  • Pots or cowls that look unsafe
  • Eroded joints in the brickwork
  • Flashings pulling away from the stack

If you own a rental within reach of Meopham station, a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak.

Before you book any roof surveyor

  • What insurance they carry
  • What’s outside the scope of the survey
  • Whether you get a written report with photos
  • Is there a chance to talk the report through?

What a roof survey includes

New Street homes and their roofs

Historic houses like Cobham College, about 3.6 miles north-east, show how far back building in the area around New Street goes. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area. Handmade clay tiles, including Kent peg tiles hung on pegs through two holes, are typical of older Kent buildings. You’ll also find oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses among the county’s older buildings. On roofs like these, good slates or tiles can outlast the nails, battens, lead and mortar around them.

If you live near a park such as Trosley Country Park, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall. For site and facilities teams at buildings like Culverstone Green Primary School, large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other.
