When to book a survey in Alfold Bars

Strong winds can lift slates, tiles and ridge pieces. Damage on a high or steep roof is hard to judge from the garden. A drone shows what has slipped, lifted or gone.

Things that frequently lead to a survey include:

  • Storm damage on steep or tall roofs
  • Cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots
  • Worn lead at chimneys and walls
  • Ridge and hip pieces working loose

Take a building like Loxwood Primary School: a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

About our drone roof survey in Alfold Bars

The weather decides whether a drone can fly. We don’t fly in high wind or heavy rain, because the drone has to stay safely under control. If the day turns out unsuitable, we’ll talk about another date or inspect what we can by other means. We check the forecast ahead of the visit and again on site. Light wind and dry weather give the clearest close-up photos. Waiting for a better day is better than a rushed flight. Typical surveys look at blocked valleys and parapet gutters and gaps where slates or tiles have gone, across tall and steep roofs, flat roofs on upper floors and large and complex roofs.

Somewhere as small as Alfold Bars, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what cannot be reached safely. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.

The report is written in plain words, so you do not need to be a roofer to follow it. Each point is backed by a photo where possible.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.

A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

What we do, step by step

You do not need to do much on the day. Point out anything you’ve noticed, such as stains, drips or loose pieces, and we’ll get on with the inspection. The survey itself takes about one to two hours on an ordinary house; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. In a small place like Alfold Bars, access is usually the main thing to plan. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Weekday and weekend visits are available.

  1. First, we check the address for flight restrictions.
  2. We arrange any permission that’s needed before we fly.
  3. We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
  4. We fly the drone close to the roof to photograph it in detail, always in sight.
  5. Your report arrives by email, with close-up photos and recommendations.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
  • Keep pets inside or away from the areas we are looking at
  • Let us know about parking before the day

What this survey can’t tell you

Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so there are some things a survey can’t cover:

  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
  • Photos in conditions too poor to fly
  • Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll suggest the right survey. The full list of what we check.

FAQs for Alfold Bars

Will you come out to Alfold Bars?

Yes, Alfold Bars is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.

How do I find out if my home in Alfold Bars is listed?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

We’ve completed more than 5,000 surveys, over more than 20 years.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?

We survey seven days a week: Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Just let us know the days that suit you.

What happens next?

We email you the written report with photos and recommendations. It’s yours to share with a seller, insurer, roofer or managing agent, whichever applies.

How long does the visit take?

On site, it usually takes between one and two hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. That includes the checks before the drone goes up.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

Surveys can also be booked by buyers’ agents acting for a client. The report is emailed, so it can go straight to your client.

For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. Recommendations are set out in order of urgency where relevant, which helps with budgets and planning.

How the survey changes by roof type

Chimney stacks

Chimney tops are hard to see from ground level. Close-up photos show the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings, so cracks and gaps are clear.

Large commercial roofs

Big roofs on offices, warehouses and units take time to inspect. A drone photographs the whole surface methodically.
