Drones, thermal imaging and Barns Green roofs
Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight. In Sussex, older roofs are frequently handmade clay tile, frequently with tile-hanging on the walls below. Some old buildings in Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.
Anyone responsible for a site like Barns Green Primary School will know that a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Barns Green
A drone can see more than your roof, so we take care. We keep the camera on the roof we’re surveying, not on gardens or windows next door. If your roof is shared, a word with next door beforehand helps. We inspect only what the owner has asked us to. Flights are kept as short as the job allows and focused on the roof in question. We survey fragile roofs, tall and steep roofs and valleys and parapet gutters, and people most often book us about loose ridge and hip tiles and worn lead at chimneys and walls.
Villages like Barns Green frequently stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.
We keep jargon out of it: if work is needed, the report says so clearly.

What a drone roof survey does not cover
Before booking, it’s worth knowing what a survey won’t do:
- Flights in high wind or heavy rain
- Structural calculations (that’s a structural engineer’s job)
- Anything inside the loft or under the coverings
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or email us and we will tell you. What a survey covers and does not.
Roof types and parts we check
- Fragile roofs
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Large and complex roofs
- Chimney stacks
- Tall and steep roofs
- Valleys and parapet gutters
The survey, step by step
Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof; as a rough guide, the survey takes about 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. If you have questions on the day, just ask. Around Barns Green, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it helps to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it’s safe.
- You give us the address so we can check the airspace.
- We arrange any permission that’s needed before we fly.
- We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
- The sub-250g drone takes close-up photos of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
- We email a written report with the photographs and our recommendations.
Getting ready for the survey
- Leave side gates unlocked
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Jot down any questions you want answered

If you’re buying, it helps to book soon after your offer is accepted, so there is time to use the report before exchange. For any other survey, just phone 07833 053749 or send us an email when you are ready.

Common questions in Barns Green
Do you cover smaller places like Barns Green?
Yes, we do. We survey roofs across London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.
Can you fly a drone over a roof in Barns Green?
Usually it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.
How long does the survey take?
Time on site depends on the roof, but most surveys take an hour or two for most houses; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. The written report follows by email.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes, if whoever owns or manages the building agrees access. We check the parts we’re given access to, and the report makes that clear.
Do I need to be at home?
If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. Access is agreed with you when booking.
What does the report include?
It works through the roof part by part, in writing and with photos, and ends with what we recommend. Points are put in order of urgency where relevant.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Not unless it is safe. Safe viewpoints, the loft space and a drone where applicable cover most of what’s needed, and anything out of sight is recorded in the report.
When to book a survey in Barns Green
Not every roof can take a person’s weight. Old slates and clay tiles crack underfoot, and some sheet roofs are fragile. A drone lets us see them closely without touching them.
Things that frequently lead to a survey include:
- Lifted or split lead flashings
- Blistered or cracked flat roof coverings
- Coverings that have slipped high up on the roof
- Storm damage on steep or tall roofs
Around Barns Green, as everywhere, small roof faults are simplest to sort before they let water in.
Before booking any roof surveyor
- What happens after the report arrives
- How much experience they have with roofs like yours
- Their report turnaround times
- How they’ll see the roof: from the ground, the loft, the roof or by drone

How we price drone roof surveys
Our packages start from £150, with VAT included. The price for your roof depends on:
- The use of thermal imaging or a drone
- The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
- How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
- The shape of the roof and its details
Price depends partly on the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, inc. VAT. Size, height and access can affect the price too.
What to tell us when you contact us
The more you let us know, the easier it is to price the survey. When you contact us, tell us:
- Dates you’re working to, like exchange
- The type of building and roof, such as pitched or flat
- Access details, such as a loft hatch or a shared roof
- Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Take them safely from ground level or a window. To get started, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email.
Different roofs, different checks
Large commercial roofs
Many commercial roofs have fragile sheets or roof lights. A drone keeps everyone off them.
Valleys and parapet gutters
When a parapet outlet blocks, water can come inside. We check outlets and photograph any build-up.
