Drone roof survey in Chalkshire
Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. A drone takes close-up photographs of those roofs from the air. It shows coverings, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters clearly, including slopes that cannot be seen from the street. Everything we find goes into a photo-illustrated written report. It also suits roofs that would be damaged by someone walking on them. If we cannot fly, we tell you why. If you’re worried about eroded pointing on a chimney stack and lead work pulling away at abutments, we can find out what’s behind it, on fragile roofs, valleys and parapet gutters and large and complex roofs alike.
Somewhere as small as Chalkshire, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
The report doesn’t just list problems. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, so you can decide what to do next.

What affects the price in Chalkshire
Survey packages start from £150, including VAT. The price for your roof depends on:
- House, block, shop or office
- How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
- The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package matters as well. We’ll give you the figure before anything is booked.

FAQs for Chalkshire
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Chalkshire?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.
Do you cover smaller places like Chalkshire?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when booking.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
Over 5,000 surveys so far, across 20+ years of surveying roofs, and 98% of customers are satisfied.
Can a drone see inside my loft?
No. A drone shows the outside surfaces of the roof in close detail, but it cannot see under the coverings. Where there’s safe access, we check the roof space from inside.
How long does the visit take?
Allow roughly 1–2 hours at a typical home; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. We’ll confirm what to expect when we arrange the visit.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. We look at the parts we are given access to.

How it works
We photograph the roof as we go, so you can see in the report what we found and where. We take close-ups from wherever is safe. Most surveys take about one to two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. Somewhere like Chalkshire needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it is safe.
- First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
- We check the airspace and seek any permission needed.
- Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are looked at.
- The drone photographs the roof closely, kept in sight throughout.
- You receive a written report with the photos and our recommendations.
Before the survey
- If it is not your property yet, arrange access through the agent
- Check we can get to the back of the property
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed

Advice
Should I look at the roof myself first?
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are frequently out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
When to book a survey in Chalkshire
The top of a stack is the most exposed part of many roofs. Cracked flaunching, loose pots and eroded pointing are often invisible from below. A drone gets close enough to see them in detail.
A survey makes sense if you’ve noticed:
- Tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack
- Flat roofs on upper floors that hold water
- Hidden gutters full of leaves
- Damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below
If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for example near Friars Square, thermal images can show trapped moisture across a wide commercial roof.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- When you will get the report
- Is there a chance to talk the report through?
- Whether the inside of the roof is included
- Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
Flying and imaging in Chalkshire
Chalkshire is about 3 miles from RAF Halton, so the Drone Safety Map is checked for restrictions around it before we fly. We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Flights in the open category stay under 120 m (400 ft), with the drone kept in sight.
For an older house near a landmark like Church of St Peter and St Paul, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help. Take a building like John Colet School: thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

Roof problems in a rented home affect tenants as well as the building. A survey shows what needs attention, so you can plan the work with less disruption.
Different roofs, different checks
Large commercial roofs
Cement sheet roofs on buildings from before 2000 may contain asbestos. We flag it in the report and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor.
Valleys and parapet gutters
When a parapet outlet blocks, water can come inside. We check outlets and photograph any build-up.
