How a drone roof survey works in Clap Hill
A drone can see more than your roof, so we take care. The camera stays on your roof, not on gardens or windows next door. If your roof is joined to a neighbour’s, it’s worth letting them know about the visit. We survey the roof you’ve asked us to look at. Flights are kept as short as the job allows and focused on the roof in question. If you’ve noticed ridge pieces that have lifted and wind damage high on the roof, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.
Some older homes in villages like Clap Hill are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, so it is a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof, before anyone decides what work it needs. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.
Where we cannot see part of the roof, the report says so. That way, it is clear what was covered and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

Airspace, weather and Clap Hill roofs
Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. Across Kent, older roofs are frequently handmade clay or peg tiles, and tile-hanging on upper walls is a familiar sight. Kent’s older buildings take in oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses as well. Steep or complicated roofs are often hard to see from the ground, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.
Westenhanger Castle, about 4.1 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Clap Hill. A drone or thermal survey doesn’t involve any work on the roof, which suits older buildings. Anyone responsible for a site like Aldington Primary School will know that a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit. If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for example near Ashford Designer Outlet, big, flat commercial roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images help most.

What a survey costs
Every roof is different, so prices are confirmed before you book. These are the things that affect it:
- The size of the roof
- Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
- The height of the building and how the roof can safely be seen
- Which survey package you book
There are three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, all including VAT. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.
Booking your survey
These details help when you contact us:
- Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
- Any marks or damp showing indoors
- Where the property is, with the postcode
- Whether there’s a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
Once you know what you need, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email. From there it’s a case of choosing a package, agreeing the price and fixing a day.

Tips that help
Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They apply to most roofs:
- Allow for a change of day in poor weather
- Let us know what you want to see
- Check there is room outside for the drone to take off
- Keep dogs indoors during the visit
We email the report to you, with close-up photographs from the flight. Findings are set out in plain English, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant.
Do not block the vents at the eaves. Condensation in the loft can damage timbers and insulation, and it is something only an inside check will show. Check insulation does not block the airflow.
When you need someone else
In fairness, a roof survey has limits:
- Photos in conditions too poor to fly
- What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
- A flight where airspace permission is refused
If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will point you to the right survey. The full list of what we check.

FAQs for Clap Hill
Is drone flying allowed in Clap Hill?
The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.
Is Clap Hill within the area you cover?
Yes, Clap Hill is covered. We survey roofs across London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.
How many surveys have you done?
We have more than 20 years’ experience and have completed over 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.
What happens after the survey?
The report arrives by email, with photographs and clear recommendations. With Standard there is a follow-up consultation; with Premium, an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. Our survey looks at the roof, not the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.
Can you survey at the weekend?
We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day, which suits people who work during the week. Let us know your preferred days as you book.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. Our report may flag materials that could contain asbestos, but only a specialist asbestos surveyor can confirm it. Buildings built or refurbished before 2000 may contain it.
How it works
Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, like when any problem began and what work has been done before. The inspection then takes about 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. In a hamlet or village like Clap Hill, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions are welcome. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
- Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
- On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
- We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
- We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.
How to prepare
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch
- Show us where any leaks or stains appear
- Keep pets in another room
Getting a price
Prices start from £400, including VAT. What you pay depends on the roof’s size, access and the package, and you can ring 07833 053749 or send us an email to find out.
Advice
How the survey changes by roof type
Large commercial roofs
Older cement sheet roofs may contain asbestos. We don’t test for it, but we flag it so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check.
Ridges and hips
Ridges may be bedded in mortar or mechanically fixed. Their condition is noted in the report.
For landlords and managing agents
We survey roofs for landlords and letting agents as well as homeowners. The report gives you a dated record of the roof, with photographs, which helps you plan work between tenancies.
Managing agents and residents’ management companies use roof surveys to plan maintenance. The report sets out what needs attention now and what can wait, which helps with budgets and planning.
