About our drone roof survey in Dagnall
The weather decides whether a drone can fly. We do not fly in high wind or heavy rain, because control and safety come first. If the day turns out unsuitable, we’ll talk about another date or inspect what we can by other means. The forecast is checked ahead of the visit and again on the day. Calm, dry conditions give the sharpest close-up photos. A short delay is better than a rushed flight. Common reasons to book are ridge and hip pieces working loose and damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below, across tall and steep roofs, fragile roofs and valleys and parapet gutters.
Some older homes in villages like Dagnall are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, so it is a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof, before anyone decides what work it needs. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.
It isn’t only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, so you can decide what to do next.

Can I check my roof myself?
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it.
Your questions about drone roof surveys in Dagnall
Are there drone restrictions around Dagnall?
The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.
How do I find out if my home in Dagnall is listed?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
How quickly is the report sent?
That depends on the survey you book: the Basic Survey report arrives within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey the same day. The report is emailed to you.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
Over 5,000 surveys so far, across 20+ years of surveying roofs, with 98% customer satisfaction.
Are you insured?
We are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. We note visible signs such as sagging or deflection, but we do not carry out calculations or give an engineer’s opinion. If we think you need an engineer, the report says so.
How much does a drone roof survey cost in Dagnall?
Our price is from £400, including VAT. The final figure depends on the roof and the package you choose, confirmed before anything is booked.
Tips that help
Nothing here needs a ladder. Our suggestions:
- Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
- Clear a spot on the drive or lawn
- Keep dogs indoors during the visit
- Expect a little longer if permission is needed
The Premium Survey report comes the same day. Drone photos are included where we could fly, alongside the other checks in the package.
Check the loft now and then, with care and a good torch. The underside often shows problems before the outside does. Photograph anything new.

What we do, step by step
Where it is relevant and can be reached safely, the roof space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement. All in, the survey normally takes between one and two hours on an ordinary house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. For a village or hamlet like Dagnall, the journey is planned in advance: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.
- First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
- Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
- We assess the conditions and the take-off spot first.
- Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
- We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
- Tell us about parking before the day
- If you are buying, let the agent know when we’re coming

Advice
Different roofs, different checks
Steep slate and tile slopes
Steep slopes are hard to inspect safely on foot. A drone photographs them closely from a safe position.
Large commercial roofs
Cement sheet roofs on buildings from before 2000 may contain asbestos. We do not test for it, but we flag it so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check.
Honest limits
It is a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. The main limits are:
- Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
- What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
- Flights in strong wind or a downpour
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll tell you. What a survey covers and does not.

Do you need a drone roof survey in Dagnall?
Hidden gutters and valleys are easy to overlook. Debris collects where nobody looks, until water overflows inside. From above, they’re easy to see.
These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:
- Cracked mortar along the ridge
- Hidden gutters full of leaves
- Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
- Lifted or split lead flashings
Take a building like Dagnall VA Church of England School: thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.
Questions to ask before you book
- When you will get the report
- Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
- Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
- Whether you can ask questions once you have the report
What a drone roof survey looks like in Dagnall
Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates, with flat-roofed extensions, dormers and garages common everywhere. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.
For an older house near a landmark like Church of All Saints, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof frequently shows up clearly on a thermal image.
