Drone roof surveys near Farnham

How a drone roof survey works in Farnham

A drone can see more than your roof, so we take care. The camera stays on your roof, not on neighbouring homes and gardens. If your roof is joined to a neighbour’s, it is worth letting them know about the visit. We inspect only what the owner has asked us to. Flights are kept as short as the job allows and focused on the roof in question. We survey fragile roofs, tall and steep roofs and flat roofs on upper floors, and common reasons people get in touch are ridge and hip pieces working loose and standing water on a flat roof.

Somewhere as small as Farnham, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you cannot get from the ground. Weather and airspace are checked before the visit. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.

Nothing in the report is left vague: where something needs attention, it says so plainly, along with how urgent it is.

What a drone roof survey looks like in Farnham

The flight restriction zone around Stansted Airport comes within about 2 miles of Farnham. We check the exact boundary for the address before flying, and if the roof falls inside it, we ask for permission first. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates, with flat-roofed extensions, dormers and garages common everywhere. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.

For an older house near a landmark like Church of St Mary the Virgin, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help. For site and facilities teams at buildings like Farnham Church of England Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. Much Hadham Palace, about 4.2 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Farnham. For older roofs nearby, a look from the air or with a thermal camera is a hands-off way to check condition.

The survey, step by step

We will ask a few questions first, such as when any problem began and what work has been done before. Then the inspection itself takes between one and two hours for most houses, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. Somewhere as small as Farnham, access is frequently the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Weekday and weekend visits are available.

  1. We start by checking the airspace and any restrictions at your address.
  2. We arrange any permission that’s needed before we fly.
  3. On the day, we check the weather and the site before flying.
  4. The sub-250g drone takes close-up photos of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
  5. We email a written report with the photographs and our recommendations.

Honest limits

Every survey has limits, and it is better to know them up front. Bear these in mind:

  • A structural engineer’s report
  • A flight where airspace permission is refused
  • A flight on a day when the weather isn’t safe

Farnham questions

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Farnham?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.

Is Farnham within the area you cover?

We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.

Which days do you carry out surveys?

Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Just let us know the days that suit you.

Will the drone film my neighbours?

We take care around neighbouring homes. The camera is pointed at your roof, not next door. It is worth telling neighbours about the flight.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Only when it is safe. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where applicable let us see the rest, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.

Does the drone show the underside of the roof?

No. The drone photographs the outer surfaces, but not the loft or the underside. We look in the loft from inside where it is safe.

Are you structural engineers?

No. We point out what can be seen, such as sagging or deflection, but we do not carry out calculations or give an engineer’s opinion. If we think you need an engineer, the report says so.

How the survey changes by roof type

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Outlets, edges and roof plant are common problem areas. They’re all captured in close-up, as far as the flight allows.

Valleys and parapet gutters

Some older terraces have a butterfly roof with a valley in the middle. You can’t see it from the street at all, but it’s plain to see from the air.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

You can learn a lot from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

Landlord and commercial surveys in Farnham

If you own several properties, you can book surveys for several addresses. To discuss a number of properties, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the addresses.

Shared roofs need a little more planning: we need access agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Let us know about it when booking and we’ll plan the survey around it.

Before and after the survey

A little preparation and a few simple habits help. Our tips:

  • Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
  • Expect us to rearrange if it is too windy or wet
  • Move stored items away from the hatch
  • Keep dogs indoors during the visit

We email the report to you, with close-up photographs from the flight. Each finding is explained in plain words, and recommendations are ranked by urgency where that helps.

Do not block the vents at the eaves. Poor airflow lets condensation build up, and it’s something only an inside check will show. Keep insulation clear of the eaves.
