About our drone roof survey in Baldock

Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. The Premium Survey includes a drone inspection where applicable, with a same-day report, structural analysis and an in-person consultation. There’s a 12-month follow-up as well. If a drone will not help on your roof, we will say so. You get a written report with the close-up photos from the flight. Common reasons to book are plant growth and moss on the roof and blocked valleys and parapet gutters, across valleys and parapet gutters, chimney stacks and fragile roofs.

Even in a smaller place like Baldock, there may be airfields or restrictions nearby, so the Drone Safety Map is checked before any flight. Exposed sites can be windy, and a small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind. Each flight is planned with neighbours’ privacy in mind, as well as the airspace and the wind.

We write the report in plain English, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Photographs show what each point refers to, and recommendations are put with the most urgent first where relevant.

How it works

We work from the outside in: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the roof space where it can be reached. All told, expect about 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. In a smaller place like Baldock, parking is seldom the issue; lanes, gates and long drives are worth mentioning. Low roofs on bungalows can often be seen well from ground level, and the loft shows the rest, while taller roofs may need other vantage points or the drone where it applies.

  1. You give us the address and let us know about the roof.
  2. Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
  3. On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
  4. Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
  5. The findings, photos and recommendations reach you by email.

Before we arrive

  • Make sure the loft hatch can be reached
  • Make sure we can get to the back of the property
  • Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller

Honest limits

In fairness, there are limits to any roof survey:

  • Whether the roof structure meets design loads
  • Anything inside the loft or under the coverings
  • A flight where airspace permission is refused

Drones, thermal imaging and Baldock roofs

The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates, with flat-roofed extensions, dormers and garages common everywhere. Many roofs like these cannot be judged properly from the pavement, and that is where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place.

Take a building like Hartsfield Junior Mixed and Infant School: big roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once. If you own one of the older houses in the streets near Church of St. Mary the Virgin, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help. Historic houses such as Hinxworth Place, about 3.6 miles north, show how far back building around Baldock goes. Close-up aerial shots and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it.

Baldock is about 2 miles north-east of Letchworth, in Hertfordshire. Wherever you are in Baldock, we can come and survey your property. Our Hertfordshire coverage includes Baldock and the places around it. You can also see our page for Milton Keynes.

Drone roof surveys in SG7 and SG6 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. Whether your property is on High Street, Station Road and London Road or a nearby road, we can survey it. Baldock is on the A507 and B197, which makes it simple to reach. How the survey changes by roof type

Ridges and hips

Some ridges are fixed with mortar, others with dry-fix systems. We record what we see of their condition.

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Outlets, edges and roof plant are common problem areas. We photograph them closely.

Before and after the survey

There is plenty you can do without going near the roof. What helps most:

  • Book early if you’re near an airport
  • Keep dogs indoors during the visit
  • Let us know about any leaks or concerns
  • Tell next door if the drone will be near their property

File the report and photos with your home documents. They give you something to compare against later.

Do not block the vents at the eaves. Condensation in the loft can damage timbers and insulation, and it is something only an inside check will show. Keep insulation clear of the eaves.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey.

A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please do not climb up for a closer look.

Baldock questions

Are there drone restrictions around Baldock?

That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Baldock?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning. Mention it when you get in touch and we will plan the survey around it.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. Our survey looks at the roof, not the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.

Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?

Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Let us know which days suit you as you book.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Only when it’s safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where applicable, a drone.

Why act early in Baldock

Photos from a drone survey show how the roof looks today. Next time, you can compare and see what has moved or worn. It helps when you plan ahead. Tradespeople may need to travel further to a smaller place like Baldock, so it’s useful to plan roof work rather than call someone out in a hurry. A survey gives you that notice.

To find out what your survey will cost, phone 07833 053749 or email us and tell us about the roof. We’ll confirm the figure before booking.
