About our drone roof survey in Hertford
We fly a sub-250g drone, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. It stays within sight for the whole flight, and well below the 120-metre height limit. Each flight is planned with the site and its surroundings in mind. Before every flight, we check the airspace and the weather. Safety comes first on every visit. Typical surveys look at blocked valleys and parapet gutters and ponding and splits on a high flat roof, across fragile roofs, flat roofs on upper floors and tall and steep roofs.
For a town like Hertford, every drone flight starts with a check of the Drone Safety Map, including zones around airports and prisons. We fly a sub-250g drone and hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. Neighbours’ privacy is part of planning every flight. In the open category, flights stay under 120 m (400 ft) with the drone in sight.
Where we cannot see part of the roof, the report says so. You’ll know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t.

How the survey changes by roof type
Ridges and hips
Wind lifts loose ridge and hip tiles. Spotting them early stops them falling.
Steep slate and tile slopes
Steep slopes are hard to inspect safely on foot. From the air, every course of slates or tiles can be seen.

What we are asked to look at in Hertford
From the pavement, most of a tall roof is out of sight. You can’t see the back slope, the valleys or the chimney tops. Problems in those places often go unseen until they leak, which is why owners turn to a drone.
Signs worth acting on include:
- Hidden gutters full of leaves
- Storm damage on steep or tall roofs
- Moss and weeds taking hold up top
- Coverings that have slipped high up on the roof
If you look after a building such as Mill Mead Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.
Before booking any roof surveyor
- Their drone registration, if they fly one
- What happens after the report arrives
- Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
- What the report includes, and whether it has photographs
Leave it or get it looked at?
Close-up photos make conversations with roofers clearer. They show the location and extent of each defect, which helps when you ask for quotes. Once water reaches the loft insulation in a home in Hertford, it loses much of its value and is slow to dry. That adds to the bill long before the leak is obvious.
Prices quoted always include VAT, and the written report is part of the package. Prices start from £400, including VAT. Where your roof sits in the range depends on its size, height and access.

What we do, step by step
Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof, but as a rough guide the survey takes about one to two hours on an ordinary house, or half a day or so for a commercial building. You’re welcome to ask questions while we are there. A survey in Hertford needs access inside and out, including the loft hatch and any rooms with damp. Mention gates, side passages and anything at the back. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.
- We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
- We check the airspace and seek any permission needed.
- Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are looked at.
- We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
- You receive a written report with the photos and our recommendations.
How to prepare
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at
- Leave side gates unlocked
- Tell us about parking before the day
Booking a survey
If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Pictures from ground level or a window are fine; never climb up to get a better view. To send them or to book, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email.
Related advice
Checking the roof from the ground
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground.
Questions from Hertford
Is drone flying allowed in Hertford?
It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain.
Do you cover Hertford?
Yes, Hertford is one of the places we work. The survey and report are the same in Hertford as anywhere else, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.
How fast do I get the report?
Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24–48 hours and Premium reports on the same day. Each one is emailed.
How many surveys have you done?
Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys.
Will you go up on the roof?
Only where it is safe to do so. We look at everything that can safely be seen: from ground level, from windows, from inside the loft space, from the roof where it is safe and by drone where it applies. Anything we cannot see is noted in the report.
Are you insured?
Our cover is professional indemnity plus public liability, and we can provide details if a managing agent needs them.
Does the report include photographs?
Yes. Photographs are taken throughout the survey, and the report uses them to show each finding alongside our recommendations.
