Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Grays
Neighbours’ privacy matters on every flight. The camera stays on your roof, not on neighbouring homes and gardens. If your roof is joined to a neighbour’s, it’s worth letting them know about the visit. We survey the roof you’ve asked us to look at. Flights are kept as short as the job allows and focused on the roof in question. Typical surveys look at ponding and splits on a high flat roof and vegetation in valleys and gutters, on chimney stacks, fragile roofs and tall and steep roofs.
Older homes in a town like Grays may lose heat through roofs with little or no insulation. A thermal camera shows those cold and warm patches, and some of them can point to moisture. What it shows is surface temperature, not water itself, so findings are checked with moisture readings. Results depend on conditions, so the timing of the visit matters.
After the visit, you get a report with photos, sent by email. It sets out the condition of the roof, any defects and our written recommendations.

Checking the roof from ground level
A lot can be seen from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.
Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Do not go up yourself.
Signs you need a drone roof survey in Grays
Walking on some roofs does more harm than good. Older slates and tiles break easily, and some sheet roofs are fragile. With a drone, the roof is photographed without anyone stepping on it.
Signs worth acting on include:
- Outlets choked with leaves and silt
- Worn lead at chimneys and walls
- Eroded pointing on a chimney stack
- Flat roofs on upper floors that hold water
Anyone responsible for a site like Quarry Hill Academy will know that big roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images show the most at once.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- Whether VAT is in the quoted price
- What happens after the report arrives
- Whether the loft is part of the inspection
- Which limits apply to the survey
How it works
There is not much for you to do on the day. Point out anything you’ve noticed, such as stains, drips or loose pieces, and we’ll get on with the inspection. The survey itself takes about one to two hours at most homes, and longer for a large or complex roof. A visit in Grays runs most smoothly with the loft hatch clear, side gates open and a parking spot in mind. Someone needs to let us in, so let us know who that will be.
- We start by checking the airspace and any restrictions at your address.
- If permission is needed, we ask for it ahead of the visit.
- Before the flight, we check the conditions and the take-off spot.
- The drone captures close-up photos of the coverings, chimneys, valleys and gutters.
- Your report arrives by email, with close-up photos and recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
- Note where any stains or damp appear
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand

Common questions in Grays
Can you fly a drone over a roof in Grays?
The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. High wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.
Is my home in Grays listed or in a conservation area?
We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case.
Will I get photos?
Yes, plenty. Each finding is shown in a picture where possible.
Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?
Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Let us know which days suit you as you book.
When does the report arrive?
Each package has its own report time. Basic is within 48 hours, Standard is 24–48 hours and Premium is the same day. If you have a deadline, such as an exchange date, tell us as you book.
What’s the best way to book?
Just ring 07833 053749 or send us an email. After a few questions, we confirm the price and fix a day.
Does the weather affect the survey?
A survey can usually go ahead in light rain, and it can even help show where water is getting in. Heavy rain or strong wind can ground a drone and make the roof unsafe, so if conditions are not right we’ll arrange another day with you.

Drone roof surveys around Grays
Grays is within about 4 miles of the coast, where wind off the sea can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. There are about 500,000 buildings on England’s list of listed buildings, and around 10,000 conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, so the council is the place to ask.
If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for example near Lakeside Shopping Centre, big, flat commercial roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images help most. For an older house near a landmark such as St John the Evangelist, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that’s where a view from the air or with a thermal camera helps.
