FAQs for Halfway Houses

Will you come out to Halfway Houses?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our area covers London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Halfway Houses?

Usually it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain.

Do you need to get into the loft?

If there is a loft and safe access to it, yes. From inside, the underside of the roof frequently shows damp, staining or daylight that cannot be seen from outside.

Do you take photos of the roof?

Yes. Photos are taken throughout the survey, and the report uses them to show each finding alongside our recommendations.

Is it a structural engineer’s report?

No. We note visible signs such as sagging or deflection, but we don’t carry out calculations or give an engineer’s opinion. If we think you need an engineer, the report says so.

Will you go up on the roof?

Only where it’s safe to do so. We inspect what can safely be seen: from the ground, from windows, from inside the roof space, from the roof where it’s safe and by drone where applicable. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.

About our drone roof survey in Halfway Houses

Neighbours’ privacy matters on every flight. We keep the camera on the roof we are surveying, not on neighbouring homes and gardens. If your roof is joined to a neighbour’s, it is worth letting them know about the visit. We survey the roof you’ve asked us to look at. Each flight is kept short and stays focused on the roof we are there to survey. If you’re worried about plant growth and moss on the roof and blistered or cracked flat roof coverings, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.

Even in a smaller place like Halfway Houses, there may be airfields or restrictions nearby, so every drone flight starts with a check of the Drone Safety Map. Exposed sites can be windy, and a small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind. Neighbours’ privacy is part of planning each flight, along with the airspace and the weather.

Most points in the report come with a picture, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

What happens on the day

The visit usually starts outside and finishes in the loft: outside views come first, then the roof space if there’s safe access. All told, expect about 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, and longer for a large or complex roof. A visit to a smaller place like Halfway Houses is no different on the day: outside, inside and from any safe vantage point, in that order. Point out any stains, cracks or loose pieces you’ve spotted.

  1. We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
  2. A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
  3. The roof is photographed from the air, with the camera kept on your property.
  4. We also look inside the roof space where it is safe.
  5. You get photos, findings and clear recommendations.

Before the survey

  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work

What we are asked to look at in Halfway Houses

Hidden gutters and valleys are easy to overlook. Debris collects where nobody looks, until water overflows inside. From above, they’re easy to see.

A survey makes sense if you’ve noticed:

  • Ridge pieces that have lifted
  • Blistered or cracked flat roof coverings
  • Eroded pointing on a chimney stack
  • Storm damage on steep or tall roofs

If you look after a building such as Halfway Houses Primary School, big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once.

Before you book any roof surveyor

  • Is there a chance to talk the report through?
  • How long they’ve been surveying roofs
  • Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
  • Which limits apply to the survey

What a good roof survey covers

Practical tips

A little preparation and a few simple habits help. Our tips:

  • Let us know about any leaks or concerns
  • Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions
  • Expect us to rearrange if it is too windy or wet
  • Clear a spot on the drive or lawn

The Premium Survey includes an in-person consultation to go through what the drone showed. It’s a chance to ask about anything in the report.

Have leaves and moss cleared from gutters, valleys and outlets, particularly in autumn. On high roofs, leave clearing to a professional. Many leaks start with a blocked outlet.

Landlord and commercial surveys in Halfway Houses

An agent can book and manage the survey for a landlord, and the report can go to both. Access is agreed with the tenant beforehand.

Managing agents and residents’ management companies use roof surveys to plan maintenance. Recommendations are set out with the most urgent first where relevant, which helps with budgets and planning.

What we cannot see

Some things cannot be seen without opening up the roof, and that sets some limits:

  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
  • Photos in conditions too poor to fly
  • Close-up photos of next door’s property

If you’re not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will give you a straight answer. The full list of what we check.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Large and complex roofs
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Fragile roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Chimney stacks
  • Valleys and parapet gutters

Should I look at the roof myself first?

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
