Drone roof survey in Knotty Green
Drone surveys suit tall houses, blocks of flats, steep roofs and large commercial roofs. They’re useful where walking on the roof could damage it or is not safe, such as old slate, clay tiles or cement sheets. The roof is photographed without being disturbed. We check the airspace for your address before the visit. If a drone is not the right tool, we will say so. We’re often asked to look into vegetation in valleys and gutters and ponding and splits on a high flat roof, on fragile roofs, chimney stacks and tall and steep roofs.
Some older homes in villages like Knotty Green are listed or in a conservation area. A look from above or with a thermal imager does not touch the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care, before anyone decides what work it needs. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.
Where we cannot see part of the roof, the report says so. That way, it is clear what was covered and what wasn’t.

What affects the cost of drone roof surveys
Several things affect the price of a survey:
- The size of the roof
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
- The height of the building and how the roof can be seen safely
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so the price reflects that. The price is confirmed before booking.

What we do, step by step
Before we start, tell us why you’ve booked: a purchase, a leak, a storm, new work or simply peace of mind. That way we can focus on what matters to you. The visit usually takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. Somewhere as small as Knotty Green, access is frequently the only tricky part. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.
- We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
- We agree a date, including weekends, subject to the weather.
- We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we are surveying.
- Where there’s safe access, we check the loft as well.
- Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.
Before the survey
- Make sure we can get to the back of the property
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at
- Let us know about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of

Drones, thermal imaging and Knotty Green roofs
Thatch survives on some older buildings in Buckinghamshire’s villages. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from ground level, drone photos and thermal images add detail. Cliveden, about 4.6 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Knotty Green. Older homes in the wider area frequently have features worth a closer look, like lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
Take an older house close to Church of St Michael and All Angels: steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that is where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps.

Signs you need a drone roof survey in Knotty Green
Steep and tall roofs are hard to inspect safely. Tall townhouses, blocks of flats and offices are typical. A drone gets close-up views from a safe position on the ground.
Typical things we’re asked to look at include:
- Ridge and hip pieces working loose
- Ponding and splits on a high flat roof
- Eroded pointing on a chimney stack
- Debris building up in hidden gutters
Anyone responsible for a site like St Mary and All Saints CofE Primary School will know that a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

Tips from our surveys
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Some tips:
- Shut pets inside while we fly
- Tell us the exact address when booking
- Mention anything you’ve noticed on the roof
- Tell next door if the drone will be near their property
Your report arrives by email, including the close-up photos taken by the drone. Each finding is explained in plain words, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant.
Have leaves and moss cleared from gutters, valleys and outlets, ideally once the leaves have fallen. On high roofs, leave clearing to a professional. Blocked hidden gutters cause many leaks.
How the survey changes by roof type
Large commercial roofs
Big roofs on offices, warehouses and units take time to inspect. A drone photographs the whole surface methodically.
Flat roofs on tall buildings
Felt often lasts around 15 to 20 years, EPDM rubber around 30 to 50 and GRP up to about 30. Photos show how the covering is wearing.
FAQs for Knotty Green
Are there drone restrictions around Knotty Green?
It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.
Do you cover smaller places like Knotty Green?
Yes, Knotty Green is covered. Our area covers London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned ahead of time.
Will I get photos?
Yes, every report has them. Each finding is shown in a picture where possible, which makes the report easy to follow.
How many surveys have you done?
We have more than 20 years’ experience and have completed over 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. It’s a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.
Will you go up on the roof?
Not unless it is safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where it applies, a drone, and the report notes anything we couldn’t see.
How soon will I get the report?
That depends on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. Reports are sent by email.
Should I look at the roof myself first?
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
