Drone roof survey in Letchmore Heath: what you get
Drone roof surveys are available in Letchmore Heath and throughout London and the South East, where the airspace and the weather allow. Flights take place on weekdays and at weekends. Every address is checked for airspace restrictions first. The report includes the drone photos and our recommendations. To check whether your roof suits a drone survey, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email. Typical surveys look at flashings that have come away and wind damage high on the roof, across large and complex roofs, chimney stacks and valleys and parapet gutters.
In a small place like Letchmore Heath, open ground can mean strong wind. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.
Most points in the report come with a picture, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

DIY checks: what’s safe
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

Shop and office owners around Harlequin Centre may find that a commercial roof can be photographed from above without anyone walking on it. If you look after a building like Fair Field Junior School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

Practical tips
A little preparation and a few simple habits help, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Our tips:
- Book early if you’re near an airport
- Clear the loft hatch so we can check inside too
- Be ready to move the date if the weather turns
- Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off
The Premium Survey report comes the same day. Drone photographs are included where we could fly.
Keep the loft space ventilated. Poor airflow lets condensation build up. Check insulation doesn’t block the airflow.
FAQs for Letchmore Heath
Is drone flying allowed in Letchmore Heath?
The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Letchmore Heath is about 1 mile from Elstree Aerodrome, so the Drone Safety Map is checked for restrictions around it before we fly. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Letchmore Heath?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
What happens after the survey?
You will receive the report by email, and what you do next is up to you: use it with a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent.
Will you walk on the roof?
Not always. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs cannot always be walked on. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where applicable let us see the rest.
What insurance do you have?
Every survey is covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance, and details are available on request.
When does the report arrive?
Report times are set by the package. Basic is within 48 hours, Standard is 24–48 hours and Premium is the same day. If you have a deadline, such as an exchange date, tell us when you book.
Is this an asbestos survey?
No. Asbestos surveys and testing aren’t part of what we do. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, like cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them, and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.
Different roofs, different checks
Chimney stacks
The drone shows the outside of the stack, not a flue, gas or sweep inspection. We’ll say if a specialist is needed.
Valleys and parapet gutters
When a parapet outlet blocks, water can come inside. We check outlets and photograph any build-up.
The survey, step by step
We do not take risks to get a closer look. We inspect whatever is safely visible, and if part of the roof cannot be seen, the report says so. The survey normally takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Cottages and farmhouses around Letchmore Heath often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. Each part is looked at from wherever it can be seen safely, and anything we cannot see is noted.
- First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
- We agree a date, including weekends, subject to the weather.
- We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we are surveying.
- If the loft can be reached safely, it’s checked too.
- Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.
Preparing for the visit
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
- Find any records of previous roof work
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with the freeholder or managing agent
How to book

Advice
When to book a survey in Letchmore Heath
Big commercial and industrial roofs cover a lot of ground. The drone covers the surface area by area. That gives a clearer picture of the roof as a whole.
We’re frequently asked to look at:
- Slipped or missing slates on a high roof
- Cracked mortar along the ridge
- Moss and weeds taking hold up top
- Storm damage on steep or tall roofs
If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near Church of St John the Baptist, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.
