About our drone roof survey in Little Horsted
Before any flight, we check the airspace. Flight restriction zones around airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick and London City need permission from the airport or air traffic control. Central London has restricted areas of its own, which need NATS permission. If we cannot fly, we use other safe vantage points instead and explain why. Prisons have their own drone restriction zones too. If you’re worried about cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots and lifted or split lead flashings, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.
In a village or hamlet like Little Horsted, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you cannot get from the ground. Weather and airspace are looked at before the visit, and the journey is planned beforehand. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
We write the report in plain English, so you do not need to be a roofer to follow it. Photos show what each point refers to.

What a drone roof survey looks like in Little Horsted
In Sussex, older roofs are often handmade clay tile, frequently with tile-hanging on the walls below. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old Sussex buildings, alongside oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up aerial photos and thermal images help. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions.
If you look after a building such as Little Horsted Church of England Primary School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit. Take an older house close to The Parish Church of St Michael and All Angels: thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

When you need someone else
Every survey has limits, and we’d rather be clear about that before booking. Keep these in mind:
- Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
- Structural calculations (that is a structural engineer’s job)
- Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
If you’re not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
Roof types and parts we check
- Fragile roofs
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Chimney stacks
- Tall and steep roofs
- Large and complex roofs
What you can safely check yourself
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Water spilling over the edge can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
For landlords and managing agents
An agent can book and manage the survey for a landlord, with the report sent to whoever needs it. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.
Where a roof is shared: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you contact us and we will plan the survey around it.
What happens on the day
There is not much for you to do on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we’ll take it from there. The survey itself takes about one to two hours for most houses, and more on a big or complicated roof. Around Little Horsted, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it’s safe.
- We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
- A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
- We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we’re surveying.
- Where there is safe access, we check the loft as well.
- Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.
Getting ready for the survey
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
- Check pets are kept safely away
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with whoever owns or manages the building

Leave it or get it looked at?
With drone photos, everyone can see the same thing. You can show exactly where the problem is. In a small place like Little Horsted, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.
We offer three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all with VAT included. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

Common questions in Little Horsted
Is drone flying allowed in Little Horsted?
The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. Strong wind or a downpour also stops a small drone flying.
Will you come out to Little Horsted?
Yes, Little Horsted is covered. We work right across London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
We’ve been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.
Does the weather affect the survey?
It can, depending on the survey. Drones can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, and thermal imaging works best with a dry roof, little wind and a sunny day beforehand. If the conditions aren’t right, we’ll talk to you about another date.
Which days do you carry out surveys?
We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day, which suits people who work during the week. Just say which days work for you.
How long will you be at the property?
It usually takes about one to two hours for a house, or half a day or so for a commercial building. You will then get the report by email.
Are you insured?
We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.
