Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Mountfield

A drone shows the outside of a roof very well, but it can’t see under the coverings or into the loft. Where there is safe access, we look in the roof space too, because the underside tells its own story. Together, the two give a fuller picture. The report sets out what the drone showed and what we found inside. Where the loft cannot be reached safely, we note it. We’re often asked to look into debris building up in hidden gutters and gaps where slates or tiles have gone, on valleys and parapet gutters, large and complex roofs and fragile roofs.

Somewhere as small as Mountfield, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you cannot get from the ground. Weather and airspace are looked at before the visit. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.

Every survey ends with a written report, with photographs, sent by email. It sets out the condition of the roof, any defects and our written recommendations.

When you need someone else

To be straight with you, there are limits to any roof survey:

  • Photos in conditions too poor to fly
  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
  • Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission

If you’re not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer. What our survey covers.

Drone roof surveys in Mountfield: local notes

Handmade clay tiles and tile-hung upper walls are typical of older Sussex houses. A few old Sussex buildings still carry heavy Horsham stone slabs, and the county’s older buildings include oast houses and Wealden hall houses. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from ground level, drone photos and thermal images add detail. We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight.

The streets around a church such as The Parish Church of All Saints are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. Historic houses such as Durhamford Manor, about 2 miles east, show how far back building around Mountfield goes. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from ground level, and a survey from above or with a thermal imager does not touch the roof itself. Take a building like Vinehall School: a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

Your questions about drone roof surveys in Mountfield

How do I find out if my home in Mountfield is listed?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.

Are there drone restrictions around Mountfield?

The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. High wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.

What insurance do you have?

Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover our surveys. If you need details for a managing agent or a building owner, just ask.

Do I need to be at home?

That depends on the survey. For inside areas and the loft space, someone has to give us access, while outside access can be discussed when you book.

Is this an asbestos survey?

No. We do not sample or test for asbestos. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000.

How experienced are you?

We have completed more than 5,000 surveys, over more than 20 years, with 98% customer satisfaction.

How long does the survey take?

It usually takes an hour or two at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. The report follows by email.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

Shared roofs need a little more planning: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Let us know about it when booking and we will plan the visit with that in mind.

Freeholders and residents’ companies use a roof report to plan and budget, putting the urgent items at the top.

Practical tips

Here are a few things we’d tell any owner:

  • Expect a little longer if permission is needed
  • Clear a spot on the drive or lawn
  • Move stored items away from the hatch
  • Give us the full address so we can check the airspace

There is a follow-up after 12 months with the Premium Survey. It helps you see how the roof has changed over the year.

Look at the roof from ground level after strong winds. Pieces of slate or tile on the ground mean something has moved. A drone survey can show what has shifted.

Can I check my roof myself?

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

What you can’t do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That is where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.

What we look for on each type of roof

Ridges and hips

Ridges and hips are the most exposed parts of a pitched roof. A drone shows cracked mortar and loose ridge tiles.

Valleys and parapet gutters

Hidden gutters and valleys sit out of sight. From above, we can see the linings, the joints and any debris.

What happens on the day

The visit typically starts outside and finishes in the loft: outside views come first, then the loft space if there is safe access. In total, it takes about 1–2 hours at most homes, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. In a small place like Mountfield, access is usually the main thing to plan. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.

  1. First, we check the address for flight restrictions.
  2. If permission is needed, we ask for it before the visit.
  3. On the day, we check the weather and the site before flying.
  4. We fly the drone close to the roof to photograph it in detail, always in sight.
  5. Your report arrives by email, with close-up photos and recommendations.

Before the survey

  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey
  • For flats, check roof access has been agreed
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch
