  • Lead work pulling away at abutments
  • Vegetation in valleys and gutters

Independent drone roof surveys in Newbury

Before and after the survey

These tips come from what we see on roofs every week, before and after a survey:

  • Make sure the loft can be reached
  • Keep dogs indoors during the visit
  • Tell next door if the drone will be near their property
  • Book early if you are near an airport

The Premium Survey report comes the same day. Drone photographs are included where we could fly, alongside the other checks in the package.

Don’t block the vents at the eaves. Poor airflow lets condensation build up, and it’s something only an inside check will show. Keep insulation clear of the eaves.

How a drone roof survey works in Newbury

The weather decides whether a drone can fly. We do not fly in strong wind or heavy rain, because control and safety come first. If the day turns out unsuitable, we’ll talk about another date. The forecast is checked ahead of the visit and again on the day. Light wind and dry weather give the clearest close-up photos. A short delay is better than a rushed flight. Common reasons to book are loose ridge and hip tiles and ponding and splits on a high flat roof, on fragile roofs, large and complex roofs and flat roofs on upper floors.

In a small place like Newbury, open ground can mean strong wind. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.

The report is written in plain words, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Photographs show what each point refers to, with the urgent items made clear.

DIY checks: what’s safe

Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Don’t go up yourself.

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

Why act early in Newbury

Leaving a high roof unchecked means relying on what you can see from below. A drone replaces that guesswork with clear photos. It’s far easier to plan work when you can see the problem. For an older or listed building in a place like Newbury, repairs may need matching materials and consent, so a defect found early gives time to plan the work properly.

The cost of a survey depends on the roof: how big it is, how high it is, the number of separate roofs and how safely it can be seen. Prices start from £400, including VAT.

Airspace, weather and Newbury roofs

Newbury lies within about 4 miles of the sea, and wind near the sea can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Flights in the open category stay under 120 m (400 ft), with the drone kept in sight.

With Belmont House and Gardens about 4.3 miles south-east, the area around Newbury has a long history. For older roofs nearby, a look from the air or with a thermal camera is a hands-off way to check condition. For site and facilities teams at buildings like Rodmersham School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

Newbury is about 3 miles south-east of Sittingbourne, in Kent. Whether the building in Newbury is a house, a flat or a commercial unit, the roof can be surveyed on a weekday or at the weekend. Our Kent coverage includes Newbury. We also survey roofs in Maidstone.

Drone roof surveys in ME9 are booked the same way as anywhere else. Neighbouring places we cover for drone roof surveys include Kingsdown (1 mile south), Dungate (1 mile south-west), Bapchild (1 mile north), Erriottwood (1 mile south-east) and Rodmersham Green (1 mile north-west). Within a short drive, we also cover Maidstone (11 miles west), Ashford (12 miles south), Canterbury (14 miles east), Sittingbourne (3 miles north-west), Whitstable (12 miles east) and Faversham (5 miles east).

Do you need a drone roof survey in Newbury?

The top of a stack is the most exposed part of many roofs. From ground level, you rarely see cracked flaunching or loose pots. A drone gets close enough to see them in detail.

These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:

  • Eroded pointing on a chimney stack
  • Blocked valleys and parapet gutters
  • Cracked mortar along the ridge
  • Coverings that have slipped high up on the roof

For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Catherine, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that’s where a view from the air or with a thermal camera helps.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • Their track record with similar roofs
  • What’s outside the scope of the survey
  • How they plan to inspect the roof safely
  • Whether the inside of the roof is included

Questions from Newbury

Will you come out to Newbury?

Yes, we do. We work right across London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Newbury?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes, as long as access is agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is often shared, so whoever owns or manages the building needs to agree access. We inspect only the parts we are allowed to reach.

Is your drone operator registered?

Yes. Our registration covers a Flyer ID and an Operator ID. The drone we use weighs under 250g, flown within the rules for the open category.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

Not always. If we only need the outside, we can agree that ahead of time, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.

How many surveys have you done?

We have more than 20 years’ experience and have completed over 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.

When does the report arrive?

Report times are set by the package. Basic: within 48 hours. Standard: 24 to 48 hours. Premium: the same day. Mention any deadline when you book.

Roof by roof

Chimney stacks

From the air, a lean or a loose pot is easy to see. We record what we find with photos.

Large commercial roofs

Many commercial roofs have fragile sheets or roof lights. With a drone, nobody has to go near them.

The survey, step by step

The visit normally starts outside and finishes in the loft: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the roof space where it can be reached. In total, it takes between one and two hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Somewhere as small as Newbury, access is often the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.

  1. We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
  2. A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
  3. The roof is photographed from the air, with the camera kept on your property.
  4. We also look inside the roof space where it’s safe.
  5. You get photos, findings and clear recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
  • Make sure we can get to the back of the property
  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
