Airspace, weather and Smeeth roofs

Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. Flights in the open category stay under 120 m (400 ft), with the drone kept in sight. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons.

If you live in an older home near Church of St Mary, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. Westenhanger Castle lies about 3.4 miles south-east, so building around Smeeth goes back a long way. Aerial photos and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it. Take a building like Smeeth Community Primary School: a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

Smeeth is about 5 miles east of Ashford, in Kent. We cover Smeeth and the rest of Kent. Smeeth is one of the places in Kent where we work. For surveys nearby, see our Canterbury page.

We cover every part of the TN25 postcode area for drone roof surveys and the streets around it. We cover properties on Church Road, Caroland Close and Woolpack Hill and the roads around them. If you are just outside Smeeth, we cover Ridgeway (1 mile west), Brabourne Lees (1 mile north-east), Lilyvale (1 mile south-east), Bircholt Forstal (1 mile north-east) and Stone Hill (1 mile south-east). We also work in nearby towns such as Ashford (5 miles west), Canterbury (12 miles north-east), Dover (14 miles east), Folkestone (9 miles east), Faversham (14 miles north) and Hythe (6 miles south-east).

How a drone roof survey works in Smeeth

Prices start from £400, including VAT. The Premium Survey includes a drone inspection where applicable, with a same-day report, structural analysis and an in-person consultation. It also includes a follow-up after 12 months. We’ll tell you if a drone is not the right tool for your roof. Every drone survey comes with a written report and close-up photographs. We are often asked to look into cracked mortar along the ridge and eroded pointing on a chimney stack, on fragile roofs, chimney stacks and flat roofs on upper floors.

In a small place like Smeeth, open ground can mean strong wind. Strong wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.

Most points in the report come with a picture, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

Smeeth questions

Are there drone restrictions around Smeeth?

That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. Strong wind or a downpour also stops a small drone flying.

How do I find out if my home in Smeeth is listed?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.

How long is the visit?

Time on site depends on the roof, but most surveys take about one to two hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. The report is sent afterwards by email.

Do you work in Smeeth?

Yes. We survey roofs in Smeeth and the rest of Kent, as part of our work across London and South East England. To book, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. We don’t carry out asbestos surveys or testing. We flag materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement sheets or soffits on pre-2000 buildings.

Will I get photos?

Yes, every report has them. Each finding is shown in a picture where possible, so you can see what we mean.

Can you survey at the weekend?

Visits run seven days a week in the daytime. Let us know your preferred days when booking.

What we can’t see

It helps to know what a survey will not do before booking:

  • Flights in a restricted zone without permission
  • Anything inside the loft or under the coverings
  • Flights in strong wind or a downpour

If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will recommend the right survey before booking. What our survey covers.

What we look at

  • Chimney stacks
  • Fragile roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Tall and steep roofs

Can I check my roof myself?

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Don’t go up yourself.

What you can’t do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.

The survey, step by step

We work from the outside in: outside views come first, then the loft space if there’s safe access. In total, it takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Older rural homes like those around Smeeth can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we can’t see is noted.

  1. First, we check the address for flight restrictions.
  2. Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
  3. We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
  4. The drone captures close-up photos of the coverings, chimneys, valleys and gutters.
  5. You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.
