The Valley: your questions answered
Does a conservation area affect roof work in The Valley?
We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Is The Valley within the area you cover?
Yes, we do. We cover the whole of London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.
How many surveys have you done?
More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years, across London and South East England.
Does the drone show the underside of the roof?
No. A drone shows the outside surfaces of the roof in close detail, but not the loft or the underside. We look in the loft from inside where it’s safe.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. We are roof surveyors, not structural engineers. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we will recommend one.
How much is a survey?
Our price is from £400, including VAT. The final figure depends on the roof and the package you choose, and it’s agreed before booking.
How do I arrange a drone roof survey in The Valley?
Simply call 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address. After a few questions, we confirm the price and fix a day, weekday or weekend.
Drone roof survey in The Valley: what you get
Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. A drone takes close-up photographs of those roofs from the air. It shows coverings, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters clearly, including slopes that can’t be seen from the street. The photos go into a written report. It also suits roofs that would be damaged by someone walking on them. If we cannot fly, we tell you why. If you’re worried about vegetation in valleys and gutters and hidden gutters full of leaves, a survey will tell you what’s going on.
In a village or hamlet like The Valley, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you cannot get from ground level. Weather and airspace are checked ahead of the visit. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.
Most points in the report come with a picture, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

What a drone roof survey looks like in The Valley
We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Flights in the open category stay under 120 m (400 ft), with the drone kept in sight. The wider area around The Valley has a long history of building, with Belmont House and Gardens about 2.1 miles north-east. If yours is one of the older homes, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
If you own one of the older houses in the streets near Church of St Lawrence, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that is where a view from the air or with a thermal camera helps.

Practical tips
A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They apply to most roofs:
- Let us know what you want to see
- Book early if you’re near an airport
- Expect us to rearrange if it’s too windy or wet
- Keep dogs indoors during the visit
The report gives any roofer you ask to quote a clear brief. They’ll see exactly where each defect is, so their quotes cover the same ground.
Keep gutters, valleys and outlets clear, especially in autumn. On tall buildings, use a professional with the right access equipment. Blocked hidden gutters cause many leaks.
What a drone roof survey doesn’t cover
This isn’t a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. It also has these limits:
- Flights in a restricted zone without permission
- What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
- Close-up photos of next door’s property
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will point you to the right survey before booking. What our survey covers.

What we look for on each type of roof
Steep slate and tile slopes
Steep slopes are hard to inspect safely on foot. A drone photographs them closely from a safe position, showing slipped, cracked and missing pieces.
Large commercial roofs
Big roofs on offices, warehouses and units take time to inspect. A drone photographs the whole surface methodically.
What happens if roof problems are left?
Faults on high roofs tend to be found late. By then, timbers, ceilings and insulation may be wet. Looking from above picks up the early signs. For older village homes like those around The Valley, the right replacement materials aren’t always easy to find quickly. That is one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.
Prices start from £150, including VAT, for a Basic Survey. Standard is from £250 and Premium from £400, both including VAT. We confirm the price for the job before booking.

The survey, step by step
Safety comes first on every visit. We inspect everything that’s safely in view, and if part of the roof cannot be seen, the report says so. Most visits take an hour or two for a house, or half a day or so for a commercial building. Cottages and farmhouses around The Valley often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints.
- You give us the address and tell us about the roof.
- Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
- On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
- Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
- You receive a written report with the photos and our recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- Check we can get to the back of the property
- Point out any leaks or damp patches
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
