Airspace, weather and Tutts Clump roofs
Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Steep or complicated roofs are frequently hard to see from the ground, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.
Basildon Park, about 4.6 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Tutts Clump. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from the ground, and a survey from above or with a thermal imager doesn’t touch the roof itself. If you look after a building such as Bradfield C.E. Primary School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.
Tutts Clump is about 5 miles north-east of Thatcham, in West Berkshire. Drone roof survey in Tutts Clump
Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. Our drone roof survey gets a camera close to them without anyone climbing. You see slates, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters in detail, including slopes that cannot be seen from the street. Everything we find goes into a written report with photos. It also suits roofs that would be damaged by someone walking on them. Where a flight is not possible, we explain why. We survey fragile roofs, tall and steep roofs and flat roofs on upper floors, and the problems we are asked to look at most are ridge pieces that have lifted and plant growth and moss on the roof.
Somewhere as small as Tutts Clump, older roofs are frequently steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you cannot get from ground level. Weather and airspace are looked at ahead of the visit. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
The report is yours to share with whoever needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent.

What a drone roof survey does not cover
It’s a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. The main limits are:
- Structural calculations (that’s a structural engineer’s job)
- What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
- Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll point you to the right survey. The full list of what we check.
What this survey covers
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Tall and steep roofs
- Large and complex roofs
- Chimney stacks
- Fragile roofs
Why act early in Tutts Clump
A drone record gives you a baseline. Next time, you can compare and see what has moved or worn. It’s useful for planning maintenance over the years. Where a roof is exposed, as many are in small places like Tutts Clump, driving rain gets into any weakness, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.
A Basic Survey starts from £150, with VAT included. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, both inc. VAT. You’ll know the price for your roof before booking.

Checking the roof from the ground
You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
It is useful to keep a record: dates of leaks, photos from ground level and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry, as it helps us focus the survey.
How the survey works
We don’t take risks to get a closer look. Everything that can be seen safely is inspected, and anything we cannot see is noted in the report. The survey normally takes roughly 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Older rural homes like those around Tutts Clump can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints.
- First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
- Any flight restriction at the address is checked, with permission requested if required.
- We assess the conditions and the take-off spot first.
- We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
- We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.
Getting ready for the survey
- If it isn’t your property yet, arrange access through the agent
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
- Check pets are kept safely away

Signs you need a drone roof survey in Tutts Clump
Height and steep pitches make close inspection risky. Tall townhouses, blocks of flats and offices are typical. We fly from ground level and bring the camera close to the roof.
Signs worth acting on include:
- Hidden gutters full of leaves
- Ridge and hip pieces working loose
- Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
- Tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack
If you own one of the older houses in the streets near St Peter's Church, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.
Questions to ask before booking
- Is VAT included in the price?
- Their report turnaround times
- How they plan to inspect the roof safely
- Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
Tutts Clump: your questions answered
Do you cover smaller places like Tutts Clump?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We survey roofs across London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Tutts Clump?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
Does your drone take thermal images?
Our drone survey is about close-up photos. Thermal imaging comes with the Premium Survey, as a separate check.
Does the report include photos?
Yes. Photos are part of every report, so you can see exactly what each finding refers to.
Can you fly a drone in central London?
Central London has restricted areas where NATS permission is needed. If permission isn’t possible, we inspect by other means and explain what we could see.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning, with the building owner or managing agent. Tell us about it when booking and we will explain what’s needed.
What happens if the weather is bad?
The flight waits for better weather. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, so a new date is agreed with you.
