What a drone roof survey looks like in West Lavington

In Sussex, older roofs are frequently handmade clay tile, frequently with tile-hanging on the walls below. Some old buildings in Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs. Many roofs like these can’t be judged properly from the pavement, and that is where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place. Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. Flights in the open category stay under 120 m (400 ft), with the drone kept in sight.

Cowdray House, about 0.6 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around West Lavington. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from ground level, and a survey from the air or with a thermal camera doesn’t touch the roof itself. The streets around a church such as The Parish Church of St Mary Magdalene are often among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. Hotels and guest houses near West Lavington cannot easily close rooms for a leak.

Drone roof survey in West Lavington

Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. Our drone roof survey gets a camera close to them without anyone climbing. You see slates, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters in detail. Everything we find goes into a photo-illustrated written report. It is also a good option where walking on the roof could break slates or tiles. Where a flight is not possible, we explain why. If you’ve noticed coverings that have slipped high up on the roof and lead work pulling away at abutments, a survey will tell you what’s going on.

Somewhere as small as West Lavington, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first, and the journey is planned in advance. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.

Nothing in the report is left vague: if work is needed, the report says so clearly.

Why get it checked now?

From the ground, you’re guessing about most of a tall roof. A drone replaces that guesswork with clear photos, slope by slope. It is far easier to plan work when you can see the problem. Around West Lavington, older homes often have old roof timbers, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it is left.

Prices start from £150, including VAT, for a Basic Survey. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, both with VAT included. We confirm the price for your survey before you book.

For landlords and managing agents

If you own several properties, surveys can be booked for more than one address. To arrange surveys for several addresses, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email with the addresses.

For a freeholder or residents’ company, a roof report is a sound basis for a maintenance plan, with the most urgent items set out first.

Before and after the survey

These tips come from what we see on roofs every week, before and after a survey:

  • Book early if you’re near an airport
  • Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared
  • Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off
  • Check the loft can be reached

The report gives any roofer you ask to quote a clear brief. The photos show the location and extent of every problem, so their quotes cover the same ground.

Every so often, look in the loft space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. The underside frequently shows problems before the outside does. Photograph anything new.

DIY checks: what’s safe

A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and a fall can be serious. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.

What a drone roof survey doesn’t cover

No survey can tell you everything, and we’d rather be clear about that before booking. Bear these in mind:

  • A structural engineer’s report
  • Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
  • Close-up photos of next door’s property

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will recommend the right survey. The full list of what we check.

West Lavington questions

How do I find out if my home in West Lavington is listed?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Do you cover smaller places like West Lavington?

We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.

What’s the best way to book?

The quickest way is to phone 07833 053749 or email us. Give us the address and a few details about the roof. Surveys run on any day of the week.

Will you go up on the roof?

Only if it’s safe. We inspect everything that’s safely in view: from the ground, from windows and vantage points, from the loft space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where it applies. Anything we cannot see is noted in the report.

What do I do with the report?

You will get the report by email, with photographs and clear recommendations. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.

How long will you be at the property?

Typically, it takes about 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Pre-flight checks of the site and the weather are part of that.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes, if whoever owns or manages the building agrees access. We look at the parts we’re given access to.

How it works

When we arrive, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you need to know. After that, we check everything we can see safely, from the ground, from windows, in the roof space and by drone where it applies. Most surveys take about one to two hours on an ordinary house, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Somewhere as small as West Lavington, access is frequently the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Weekday and weekend visits are available.

  1. First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
  2. Any flight restriction at the address is checked, with permission requested if required.
  3. Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are checked.
  4. We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
  5. We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.

How to prepare

  • Keep pets inside or away from the areas we are looking at
  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch
  • Show us where any leaks or stains appear
