Flat roofs in Durley
Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Flat roofs on extensions, dormers, garages and business units are found alongside them almost everywhere. The wider area around Durley has a long history of building, with South Stoneham House about 5 miles west. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
For an older house near a landmark such as Church of the Holy Cross, later flat-roofed additions are common on older houses, and their edges and upstands often show the first signs of wear. Take a building like Durley Church of England Controlled Primary School: ponding and blocked outlets on a wide flat roof are worth catching before the next wet season.
Durley is about 3 miles north-east of Hedge End, in Hampshire. In Durley, as across Hampshire, every roof gets the same careful survey. Our area takes in places right across Hampshire, large and small. For surveys nearby, see our Southampton page.

Electronic leak detection for homes and businesses in Durley
Electronic leak detection, or ELD, finds holes in flat roof waterproofing membranes. It uses a small electrical current that passes through the membrane only where there is a breach. That lets us locate holes that are too small to see so your roofer knows exactly where to repair. The results come in a report with photos. We survey roof terraces and balconies, single-ply roofs and commercial flat roofs, and people most often book us about waterproofing to test before it’s covered and stains far from any visible defect.
Somewhere as small as Durley, flat roofs tend to be on extensions, garages and converted outbuildings. They need the same care as any town roof: outlets, upstands, edges and the covering itself. We simply plan the journey and access beforehand. Garages and outbuildings are easy to forget, so mention any you want included as you book.
If any part of the flat roof membrane couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. You will know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

Leave it or get it looked at?
Water trapped under a membrane can soak insulation and decking. Finding the breach sooner limits that. Outbuildings and barns around Durley are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. It’s worth including them in a survey before a winter does the damage.

What we cannot see
Before booking, it’s worth knowing what a survey won’t do:
- Build-ups without a suitable layer below
- Leaks from plumbing or windows
- How wet the insulation is
If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will point you to the right survey before you book. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
What this survey covers
- Commercial flat roofs
- Green roofs
- Flat roof membranes
- Liquid-applied waterproofing
- Single-ply roofs
- Roof terraces and balconies
Checking the roof from ground level
Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Do not go up yourself.
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are frequently out of sight.
Durley questions
Is Durley in the area you cover?
Yes, Durley is within the area we cover. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Just ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and tell us about the property.
Do you cover smaller places like Durley?
Yes, Durley is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
Is the repair part of the test?
No, our part is finding the breaches. Your roofer uses the report to target the repair.
What will the report tell me?
It explains what we saw, what it means and what we’d suggest, with photos throughout. It also says if any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, so you know exactly what was covered.
Do you look in the roof space?
If the survey needs it and the loft space can be reached safely, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps, and if the loft can’t be reached safely, the report says so.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. We point out what can be seen, like sagging or deflection, but we don’t carry out calculations or give an engineer’s opinion. Where an engineer is needed, we say so in the report.
What do I do with the report?
You receive the written report by email, with photos and recommendations. It’s yours to share with a seller, insurer, roofer or managing agent, whichever applies.

What we’re asked to look at in Durley
Joints and laps in a membrane can fail over time. Small openings at laps can leak for months before it shows.
We are often asked to look at:
- Holes left by work on the roof
- Patched roofs that still leak
- Waterproofing to test before it is covered
- Gaps at membrane joints
Landlords with a home close to Hedge End station may find that flat roofs on let property tend to be checked only when they fail, which is the costly way round.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- Whether VAT is in the quoted price
- What the report includes, and whether it has photographs
- How soon the report will arrive
- What’s outside the scope of the survey
The survey, step by step
There isn’t much for you to do on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we’ll get on with the inspection. The survey itself takes as long as needed for the membrane area and the build-up, which we’ll explain when we quote. In a hamlet or village like Durley, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions are welcome. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- We start by finding out what the roof is made of and where it leaks.
- We check that the membrane and build-up suit electronic leak detection.
- The testing method is chosen to suit the membrane and build-up.
- The roof is tested and any breaches are located.
- The breaches are recorded with photos in a report for your roofer.
How to prepare
- Show us where any leaks or stains appear
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with the building owner or managing agent
