Electronic Leak Detection in Hoddesdon
We carry out electronic leak detection in Hoddesdon and the rest of Hertfordshire. We survey seven days a week.
- Repairs that haven’t stopped the leak
- New membranes needing a check before handover
- A flat roof leak that can’t be traced
How the survey works
Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. The inspection then takes a time that depends on the membrane area and the build-up, and we’ll give you a guide when quoting. A typical visit in Hoddesdon begins with the street side of the roof and then moves round the building. The back garden is often where extensions, dormers and rear slopes are best seen. Then, if it can be reached safely, we look in the loft.
- First, you let us know about the roof build-up and where water is showing.
- We check that the membrane and build-up suit electronic leak detection.
- The method depends on the membrane and what sits above and below it.
- We test the membrane and find where current is passing through it.
- We send a report with photos of each breach so your roofer can repair it.
Before we arrive
- Tell us about parking before the day
- Leave a clear route to the loft
- Make sure we can get to the back of the property
Getting a price

Electronic leak detection for homes and businesses in Hoddesdon
You get a report showing the location of each breach with photos. Your roofer can then repair those points instead of hunting for the leak. We do not estimate repair costs, so your roofer prices the work. Testing again after repairs can confirm the breaches have been dealt with, where the roof still suits the method. You get a written report with photographs. Common reasons to book are leaking laps in the waterproofing and leaks that return after repairs, on green roofs, flat roof membranes and roof terraces and balconies.
In a town like Hoddesdon, lots of shops, schools and business units have flat roofs. Out of sight, they tend to be forgotten until a leak appears. A close look at outlets, upstands and the membrane itself shows where it stands. If someone else manages the building, let us know so roof access can be arranged.
Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

Checking the roof from ground level
A lot can be seen from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.
What you can’t do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and a fall can be serious. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.
Flat roofs in Hoddesdon
Listing and conservation areas can both shape what roof work is allowed on an older home. The council is the place to check, along with Historic England’s list, before anyone quotes for re-roofing. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates, and flat-roofed additions turn up almost everywhere. Flat roofs fill the gaps in between, on extensions, garages, dormers and business premises.
If you look after a building such as Sheredes School, large flat roofs, common on schools and other public buildings, need their outlets, upstands and coverings checked regularly. Landlords with a home close to Broxbourne station may find that flat roofs on let property tend to be checked only when they fail, which is the costly way round. The streets around a church such as Church of St Catherine & St Paul are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, later flat-roofed additions are common on older houses, and their edges and upstands often show the first signs of wear.

Hoddesdon: your questions answered
Is Hoddesdon in the area you cover?
We do. The survey and report are the same in Hoddesdon as anywhere else.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Hoddesdon?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.
Can you inspect my roof with a drone?
Where it helps and it’s safe, yes. Whether we can fly on the day depends on the weather and the airspace rules. We are a CAA-registered drone operator.
Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?
No. Asbestos surveys and testing are not part of what we do. We flag materials that could contain asbestos, like cement sheets or soffits on pre-2000 buildings, and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.
Are you structural engineers?
No. We note visible signs like sagging or deflection, but we are not structural engineers and do not carry out calculations. Where an engineer is needed, we say so in the report.
Does the report include photos?
Yes. Photos are part of every report, so you can see each point for yourself.
How is ELD priced?
We quote for each roof individually. Tell us about the roof and where it leaks, and call 07833 053749 or send us an email for a quote.
What this survey cannot tell you
We only report what can safely be seen on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:
- Leaks from walls, copings or rooflights
- Parts of the roof covered by fixed equipment
- Repairing the breaches (that is for your roofer)
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll tell you. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
What this survey covers
- Single-ply roofs
- Green roofs
- Commercial flat roofs
- Roof terraces and balconies
- Flat roof membranes
- Liquid-applied waterproofing
Roof by roof
Liquid-applied waterproofing
What lies under a liquid coating decides if ELD will work.
Bituminous membranes
Many flat roofs use bitumen-based membranes. Whether ELD suits them depends on the build-up.
What a survey costs
To price your survey, we check:
- The height of the building and how the roof can safely be seen
- The shape of the roof and its details
- The use of thermal imaging or a drone
- The roof’s overall size
All our prices include VAT. We quote electronic leak detection for each roof, as the method and time depend on the roof. You will know the price for the job before booking.
Getting in touch
A little information up front helps. Please include:
- Any photos you have, taken from ground level or a window
- What kind of property and roof it is
- The reason for the survey, such as buying, a leak or storm damage
- Your timetable, such as an exchange date
To book a survey, call 07833 053749 or email us and let us know the address and what’s prompted the survey. You’ll know the price before anything is booked.
What happens if roof problems are left?
Some flat roof leaks come from walls or details. Testing shows whether the membrane is breached so attention can go to the right place. Blocked gutters and downpipes on homes in Hoddesdon overflow onto walls, and damp follows inside. A slipped tile or worn flashing does the same higher up. Neither gets better on its own.
To find out what your survey will cost, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and some details. We’ll confirm the figure before booking.
