Electronic leak detection in Nursted

How electronic leak detection works in Nursted

Our ELD testing covers flat roofs in Nursted and the rest of London and the South East. Testing usually takes a length of time set by the membrane area and the build-up, which we’ll explain when we quote. Every roof is quoted on its size and build-up. The results come in a written report with photos. If you’ve noticed failed seams and laps and leaks through a covered membrane, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.

In a small place like Nursted, a flat roof can stand in the open, which is hard on edges, upstands and joins in the covering. Older felt roofs, often around 15–20 years in life, show it first. Rubber and GRP last longer, though trims and joints still need a look. On an exposed roof, the edges tend to go first.

It is not only a list of defects. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

Different roofs, different checks

Bituminous membranes

Many flat roofs use bitumen-based membranes. The build-up decides which method will work.

Green and ballasted roofs

Roofs with planting or ballast hide the membrane. Testing may still be possible but it depends on the layers.

Nursted: your questions answered

Is my home in Nursted listed or in a conservation area?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Do you cover Nursted?

Yes, Nursted is within the area we cover. We work right across London and South East England. Just ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and tell us about the property.

Can every flat roof be tested?

Not every roof is suitable. Certain membranes are conductive and some roofs lack the layer the test needs. If your roof won’t work, we will say so at the start.

Can you survey in bad weather?

It can, depending on the survey. Drones cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, and thermal imaging works best with a dry roof, little wind and a sunny day beforehand. If the conditions aren’t right, we will talk to you about another date.

How do I arrange electronic leak detection in Nursted?

The quickest way is to phone 07833 053749 or send us an email. Give us the address and some details about the roof, and we’ll take it from there. We survey seven days a week.

What does electronic leak detection do?

It uses an electrical current to find breaches in a flat roof membrane. The current only gets through where the membrane is breached so we can pinpoint it.

What insurance do you have?

We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance.

Landlords, agents and block managers in Nursted

Letting agents and landlords in Nursted book surveys as well as householders. The report gives you a dated record of the flat roof membrane, with photographs, useful for planning maintenance.

For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. Recommendations are set out in order of urgency where relevant, which helps with budgets and planning.

The survey, step by step

After the inspection, everything we found is written up as a written report with photos, sent to you by email. As for time on site, most surveys take more time on a big roof than a small one, and the build-up of the roof makes a difference too. Cottages and farmhouses around Nursted often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen, and anything we can’t see is noted.

  1. First, we confirm which roof areas are included.
  2. The surface is prepared for the chosen method.
  3. We work across the roof with the test equipment.
  4. We mark the breach locations in our records.
  5. You receive the results to pass to your roofer.

Before we arrive

  • Make sure we can get to the back of the property
  • Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
  • For flats, make sure roof access has been agreed

DIY checks: what’s safe

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.

Useful tips for Nursted property owners

A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Tips:

  • Keep outlets clear of debris
  • Let us know about the membrane and build-up if you know it
  • Don’t leave water getting in
  • Record dates and spots where water appears

After your roofer repairs the breaches, a retest can confirm them, where the roof still suits the method.

Consider testing a new membrane before it’s covered. Finding breaches is simpler at that stage.

Honest limits

We only report everything that’s safely in view on the day, so there are some things a survey cannot cover:

  • Water entering through details rather than the membrane
  • Fixing the holes we find
  • The extent of water in the insulation

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll tell you before booking. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

Local flat roofs in Nursted

About 2.5 miles south-east lies Uppark, a reminder of how long the area around Nursted has been built on. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area. A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Alongside them, flat-roofed extensions, dormers, garages and commercial units are common almost everywhere.

Landlords with a home close to Petersfield station may find that flat roofs over rear additions and dormers in rented property are worth checking between tenancies. Take a building like The Petersfield School: a large flat roof with a good many outlets and rooflights has many places where a membrane can fail.
