Where a roof is shared: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Tell us about it when booking and we’ll plan the visit with that in mind.
Letting agents can arrange access with tenants, at a time agreed in advance. Surveys run on any day of the week, which can make access easier.
Roof survey in Nursted: what you get
People book a roof survey for all sorts of reasons. Some have spotted a stain or a slipped slate, others want a check before selling or after years without one. Whatever the reason, the survey works the same way: we inspect carefully and explain what we see in writing. We survey on weekdays and at weekends, so finding a time is rarely difficult. Common reasons to book are water stains on rafters and ceiling joists and standing water on a flat roof, on flat roofs, clay and concrete tiles and chimney stacks.
In a village or hamlet like Nursted, older cottages and farmhouses often sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Older roofs may be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, often with chimneys that have stood a long time. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. On older roofs, it’s usually the chimneys and lead flashings that need work first.
The report is written in plain words, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Photographs show what each point refers to, and recommendations are put in order of urgency where relevant.

Different roofs, different checks
Natural slate
Natural slate can last 100 years or more, yet the nails holding it often fail long before the slate. Slipped, cracked and missing slates are all noted, and for clips that show past repairs.
Flat roof coverings
Standing water, blisters and splits all point to wear. We also look at the edges, upstands and outlets.
What we do, step by step
Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the loft space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. The whole visit typically takes about one to two hours on an ordinary house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. Rural addresses near Nursted can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.
- You let us know the address, the type of roof and what’s worrying you.
- A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday.
- We look at the roof from every safe vantage point outside.
- We then look in the loft for damp, staining and the condition of the underlay.
- You receive the report with photos and recommendations, prioritised by urgency.
Getting ready for the survey
- Let us know about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
- Tell us where we can park nearby
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch
Getting a price

Leave it or get it looked at?
Hidden gutters and valleys can fail without warning. When they do, water comes straight into the house. We check them before they cause trouble. Matching old materials, such as handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.
We offer three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, with VAT included. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

Your questions about roof surveys in Nursted
Do you cover smaller places like Nursted?
Yes, Nursted is covered. Our area covers London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it is useful to know about access.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Nursted?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
We have more than 20 years’ experience and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. We check the parts we’re given access to.
Do you give a life expectancy for the roof?
We don’t give a number of years. The report explains the condition of each part and the signs of wear, with recommendations ranked by urgency.
When will the report arrive?
It depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard within 24 to 48 hours and Premium the same day. It is emailed to you.

Nursted homes and their roofs
If the drone is used for your survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying. Uppark, about 2.5 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Nursted. Older homes in the wider area frequently have features worth a closer look, like lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
Take a building like The Petersfield School: its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale. For landlords with property near Petersfield station, a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak.
Nursted is about 2 miles south-east of Petersfield, in Hampshire. Bookings from Nursted are handled just like any other: a call or an email, a price, then a date. Our Hampshire coverage includes Nursted and the places around it. For surveys nearby, see our Portsmouth page.

Practical tips
Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out as worth the effort:
- Watch for slipped slates after bad weather
- File the report with your home documents
- Stay off ladders and the roof
- Have details of recent roof work to hand
Where it helps, we say which items are urgent. Some things need prompt attention, others can be planned for. It makes the next steps much clearer.
Plan a roof survey every few years, or sooner after severe weather. Regular checks catch problems while they’re small. Compare each report with the last.
When you need someone else
Some things cannot be seen without opening up the roof, so a survey has limits:
- The condition of the rest of the building (that is a RICS home survey)
- How the roof will behave in every kind of weather
- Structural calculations (that is a structural engineer’s job)
