Roof surveys in Forestside

How a roof survey works in Forestside

We survey roofs in Forestside and across London and South East England. We carry out surveys on weekdays and at weekends. We’re insured for professional indemnity and public liability. You get a written report by email, with photos and clear recommendations. Houses, flats and commercial buildings all follow the same careful process. To arrange a survey, phone 07833 053749 or email us. If you’re worried about condensation or damp timbers in the loft and standing water on a flat roof, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on flat roofs, chimney stacks and the roof space alike.

In a village or hamlet like Forestside, older cottages and farmhouses frequently sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Roofs there can be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, and chimney stacks are often old. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. On older roofs, it’s typically the chimneys and lead flashings that need work first.

With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

The survey, step by step

We photograph the roof as we go, so you can see in the report what we found and where. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available, including by drone where it’s applicable and the weather allows. A typical visit takes about 1–2 hours for a house, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. Somewhere as small as Forestside, access is frequently the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.

  1. You pick the package that suits your roof.
  2. On the day, we start by hearing what you’ve noticed.
  3. We inspect and photograph every part of the roof we can safely see.
  4. Moisture detection, a structural check, thermal imaging or a drone are added where your package includes them.
  5. The report is emailed with findings and recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
  • If it isn’t your property yet, arrange access through the agent
  • Leave a clear route to the loft

What a roof survey does not cover

Our survey is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:

  • Walls, floors and services below the roof
  • Confirmation of asbestos in soffits or cement sheets
  • Whether the roof structure meets design loads

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll tell you before you book. What a survey covers and does not.

What we check

  • Clay and concrete tiles
  • The roof space
  • Ridges, hips and valleys
  • Lead flashings
  • Flat roofs
  • Natural slate
  • Chimney stacks

Different roofs, different checks

Clay plain and peg tiles

Older homes in the Weald and across the South East frequently have clay plain tiles, and some have Kent peg tiles held by pegs. When pegs or battens rot, tiles slip.

Natural slate

Natural slate can last 100 years or more, yet the nails holding it frequently fail long before the slate. We check for slipped, cracked and missing slates.

Roof surveys around Forestside

Forestside is within about 5 miles of the coast, and places near the sea get more salt in the air and more wind than inland. Metal fixings and flashings corrode faster in salt air, while gales work at loose ridges, slates and tiles, and driving rain gets into whatever gap is left. Where the drone is part of the survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.

Homes near green spaces such as Stansted Park can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls. For an older house near a landmark such as Christ Church, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine.

Forestside is about 4 miles east of Horndean, in Hampshire. In Forestside, as across Hampshire, every roof gets the same careful survey. Forestside is one of the places in Hampshire we cover for roof surveys. For surveys nearby, see our Portsmouth page.

Here we cover the PO9 postcode area for roof surveys. If you need a roof survey at a property on Lodge Lane and Forestside or a nearby road, we can survey it. Neighbouring places we cover for roof surveys include West Marden (1 mile north-east), Chalton (3 miles north-west), Blendworth (3 miles west), Buriton (5 miles north) and Nursted (5 miles north). Further out, we also cover Gosport (13 miles south-west), Havant (5 miles south-west), Fareham (13 miles west), Horndean (4 miles west), Waterlooville (6 miles west) and Petersfield (7 miles north).

Why get it checked now?

A roof that has had no attention for years can surprise you. Our report gives you a record of how the roof is today, which makes later changes easy to spot. Older and listed buildings around Forestside may need consent and matching materials for repairs, so leaving a defect until it is urgent leaves less time to plan.

The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where it applies, which starts from £400, with VAT included. We can help you choose the package that fits what you’d like to know.

Why choose Independent Roof Survey in Forestside

  • Independent findings on the roof’s condition
  • Two decades and more of roof surveys
  • Every finding written up with photos
  • CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID)

See our cost guide or our case studies.

Do you need a roof survey in Forestside?

Not every roof problem comes from outside. Poor ventilation lets condensation build up in the loft, and the damp gets into timbers and insulation. It can look like a leak, and it needs a different fix.

People typically book a survey when they’ve noticed something like this:

  • Slates or tiles that have slipped or broken
  • Cracked mortar along the ridge
  • Leaning or weathered chimney stacks
  • Leaking gutter joints and downpipes

Uppark lies about 3.2 miles north, so building around Forestside goes back a long way. Older roofs nearby often mix original materials with later repairs, and the survey shows where each one is.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Are they insured for the work?
  • Whether VAT is added on top
  • Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
  • How they plan to inspect the roof safely

What to expect from a roof survey

Can I check my roof myself?

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.

Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Don’t go up yourself.

Forestside questions

How do I find out if my home in Forestside is listed?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.

I let a flat near Rowlands Castle station. Can you check the roof?

Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for. Just phone 07833 053749 or send us an email with the details.

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Where it is applicable and safe, yes. We fly a sub-250g drone and we are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Drone inspection is part of the Drone Roof Survey and the Premium Survey, where it applies.

Do you carry out asbestos surveys?

No. Asbestos testing is not part of our service. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement sheets or soffits on older buildings, we flag them and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.

What does a roof survey include?

We check the coverings, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters, along with the loft where it is safe. The report includes photos and recommendations.

Will the report say how many years my roof has left?

Not as an exact number, because so much depends on the fixings, underlay and upkeep. Instead, we set out what’s sound, what’s wearing and what to do first.

What if it rains on the day?

Light rain is typically fine; heavy rain and wind are different. High wind or heavy rain can make access unsafe and ground a drone, so we’d move the date with you.
