Gutter surveys for Forestside homes and businesses

Gutter surveys for homes and businesses in Forestside

This survey covers rainwater above ground: gutters, outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows. It isn’t a CCTV drain survey, so we cannot see inside underground pipes. Where water seems to be backing up from below ground, the report will say so, with a suggestion to book a separate drain survey. Problems above ground, from split hoppers to leaking downpipes, are photographed and noted. Typical surveys look at fascia boards damaged by overflowing water and gutters overflowing in heavy rain, on fascias and soffits, parapet and box gutters and eaves gutters.

In a village or hamlet like Forestside, older cottages and farmhouses frequently sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Roofs there can be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, and chimney stacks are often old. We report on whatever is safely visible, and thatch is a specialist material. On older roofs, it’s usually the chimneys and lead flashings that need work first.

Report times depend on the survey you book: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

What happens on the day

The visit typically starts outside and finishes in the loft: outside views come first, then the loft space if there’s safe access. All told, expect about one to two hours at a typical home, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. In a small place like Forestside, access is normally the main thing to plan. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.

  1. We start with what you’ve noticed, such as damp or overflowing gutters.
  2. We walk round the building and check the gutters, downpipes and fascias from ground level.
  3. Valleys, parapets and box gutters are inspected where they can safely be seen.
  4. The roof space is checked for staining, where it can be reached safely.
  5. You receive a report with photos and recommendations.

What we can’t see

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, so a survey has limits:

  • Whether a material contains asbestos (a specialist asbestos surveyor’s job)
  • Parts of gutters that can’t be seen safely
  • The inside of buried drains

If you’re not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book. The full list of what we check.

Common questions in Forestside

Is the coastal weather around Forestside hard on roofs?

Near the coast, roofs face more wind and more salt than further inland. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces.

Is Forestside within the area you cover?

Yes, we do. We cover the whole of London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Where it helps and it’s safe, yes. Whether we can fly on the day depends on the weather and the airspace rules. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID.

Will you go up on the roof?

Only when it’s safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where it applies, a drone, and anything out of sight is recorded in the report.

Can you give me structural calculations?

No. Visible signs like deflection or sagging are recorded, but calculations and an engineer’s opinion are outside what we do. The report will say if you need an engineer.

What’s the best way to book?

Just phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address. After a few questions, we confirm the price and fix a day, weekday or weekend.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. Our survey looks at the roof, not the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you will need a RICS survey as well.

Can I check my roof myself?

You can learn a lot from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it.

Gutter surveys in Forestside: local notes

The coast is about 5 miles or less from Forestside, so there’s more wind and more salt in the air than further inland. Near the sea, metal fixings wear faster and loose pieces on a roof are more likely to lift, while driving rain finds any gap. Historic houses such as Uppark, about 3.2 miles north, show how far back building in the area around Forestside goes. On older houses around here, roofs frequently carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead.

Living close to Stansted Park is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls. If you own a rental within reach of Rowlands Castle station, a dated record of the roof is useful when planning maintenance across a let.

Forestside is about 4 miles east of Horndean, in Hampshire. Houses, flats, blocks and commercial buildings in Forestside can all book gutter surveys, with a written report and photographs every time. How we price gutter surveys

All our prices include VAT. What changes the price is:

  • The size of the roof
  • How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
  • Basic, Standard or Premium
  • Height and safe access

Every price we give includes VAT, and the report isn’t charged as an extra. Gutter survey starts from £150, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.

Getting in touch

The more you let us know, the easier it is to price the survey. When you contact us, tell us:

  • Photos of the roof, taken safely from ground level or a window
  • Where water is showing inside, if it is
  • The kind of building and roof involved
  • What made you get in touch

Every survey is priced before it’s booked, so you know where you stand. Gutter survey starts from £150, including VAT. For a price for your roof, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

What we look for on each type of roof

Box and secret gutters

A secret gutter is tucked under the slates or tiles at an abutment or valley and is easy to overlook. The report records what could and couldn’t be seen.

Lead-lined valley and parapet gutters

Many older homes have lead-lined valley and parapet gutters. A split lining can leak straight into the building.

Do you need a gutter survey in Forestside?

Valley, parapet and box gutters are often lined with lead or a sheet material. When a lining splits or an outlet blocks, the water can come inside as there is nowhere harmless for it to go. Lead is also a target for theft.

We’re frequently asked to look at:

  • Fascia boards damaged by overflowing water
  • Hoppers and outlets full of debris
  • Leaves and moss blocking gutters
  • Water spilling over the gutter edge

Take an older house close to Christ Church: old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs.
