Roof Survey in Chalton
Roof surveys across Chalton, with over 20 years’ experience behind it. You get a clear report with photos.
- Loose chimney pots
- Gutters that overflow in heavy rain
- Slates or tiles that have slipped or broken
Tips that help
Small things make a difference, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Our tips:
- Ask about a flat roof on an extension or garage too
- Don’t climb onto the roof yourself
- Tell us about any leaks or stains you’ve seen
- Keep the report with your property records
Keep the report with your property records. It is a useful baseline for future surveys, and buyers may ask about the roof when you sell.
Plan a roof survey every few years, or sooner after severe weather. Routine surveys pick up wear before it leaks. Compare each report with the last.
How a roof survey works in Chalton
Good roofs last decades, but their parts wear at different rates. Natural slate can last 100 years or more, and clay and concrete tiles commonly 50 years or more, but the fixings and underlay beneath them often give out sooner. A survey shows which parts of your roof are wearing. That lets you plan work in good time rather than after a leak. We survey ridges, hips and valleys, natural slate and the roof space, and common reasons people get in touch are flashings that have come away from the wall and loose ridge or hip tiles.
In a village or hamlet like Chalton, older cottages and farmhouses frequently sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Older roofs may be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, frequently with chimneys that have stood a long time. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. On older roofs, it’s normally the chimneys and lead flashings that need work first.
The written findings come by email, ready to forward to whoever needs them. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

How long does the visit take?
Allow roughly 1–2 hours for a house, and more on a big or complicated roof. We will give you an idea of timing as you book.

What we do, step by step
We look at the roof from outside and, where it is relevant and there is safe access, from inside the roof space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. The whole visit usually takes about 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. In a small place like Chalton, access is normally the main thing to plan. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.
- We start by hearing what you’d like checked and why.
- We arrange a day that suits you, including weekends.
- The roof is inspected from the ground, windows, the loft and the roof itself where it is safe.
- We check the coverings, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters, and photograph what we find.
- Your report arrives by email, with recommendations prioritised by urgency.

Signs you need a roof survey in Chalton
Wherever a roof meets a wall, a chimney or another roof, a flashing keeps water out. Over time lead flashings split, lift or work loose, and mortar fillets crack away from the wall. Lead is also a target for theft.
Look out for signs like these:
- Lifted, split or missing lead flashings
- Worn or blocked valleys
- Water stains on rafters and ceiling joists
- Crumbling chimney pointing or cracked flaunching
If you let a flat or house near Rowlands Castle station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at.
