How a gutter survey works in Denmead

Most blocked gutters are full of leaves, moss or silt. Buildings near trees collect more, and moss washing off a tiled or slate roof adds to it. We note where gutters are clogged or holding water and where outlets or hoppers are choked and whether overflows are working. The photos show you exactly what we found. Blocked gutters are easy to put off but it rarely improves. We survey fascias and soffits, parapet and box gutters and eaves gutters, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are rotten fascias or stained soffits and valley or box gutters that overflow inside.

Around Denmead, gardens, hedges and nearby trees can mean leaves and moss end up on roofs and in gutters. Once gutters and outlets block, water spills over and soaks the walls. It is the kind of slow problem a roof report picks up early. Plants growing from a gutter or moss on the tiles are signs worth noting from the ground.

With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Do you need a gutter survey in Denmead?

Moss grows on many tiled and slate roofs, and rain washes it down into the gutters. Mixed with grit from the roof, it settles as silt that slows the flow and gives plants somewhere to grow.

These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:

  • Fascia boards damaged by overflowing water
  • Leaks at the gutter joints
  • Water backing up from a hidden gutter
  • Gutters full of debris and silt

If you own a rental within reach of Cosham station, a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Whether you get a written report with photos
  • Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
  • Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
  • Are they insured for the work?

What a roof survey includes

What a survey costs

Not every roof costs the same to survey, and it comes down to:

  • The height of the building and how the roof can be seen safely
  • Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
  • The size of the roof
  • House, block, shop or office

The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where it applies, from £400 including VAT. We will tell you which package suits the questions you have.

Getting in touch

When you call or email, these details help:

  • The style of property, from a terrace to a block
  • Your timetable, such as an exchange date
  • Where the property is, with the postcode
  • Any marks or damp showing indoors

Unsure which package suits your roof? It’s easiest to call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and describe the roof and why you want it surveyed. We’ll explain the options and the price.

Different roofs, different checks

Fascias and soffits

Soffits and timber fascias suffer when gutters overflow. We check them along with the gutters.

Lead-lined valley and parapet gutters

A London butterfly roof drains to a central valley gutter and if it blocks, water can come indoors. It is inspected as far as safe access allows.

What happens on the day

A survey visit follows a simple order: we hear what you’ve seen, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, photograph what we find and record our findings for the written report. Most visits take roughly 1–2 hours at most homes, and longer for a large or complex roof. A visit to a smaller place like Denmead is no different on the day: outside, inside and from any safe vantage point, in that order. Point out any stains, cracks or loose pieces you’ve spotted.

  1. We start by hearing about any drips, overflows or damp patches.
  2. The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are looked at from ground level and vantage points.
  3. Valley, parapet and box gutters are inspected as far as they can be seen safely.
  4. Where the loft can be reached safely, we check it for staining or damp.
  5. The findings are written up with photographs and recommendations.

Before the survey

  • Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
  • For flats, check roof access has been agreed
  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed

Booking a survey

Photos help, if you have them. Pictures from the ground or a window are fine, and please don’t climb up for a closer look. To send them or to book, call 07833 053749 or send us an email.

Your questions about gutter surveys in Denmead

Do roofs near the sea, like those around Denmead, take more of a battering?

Often, yes. Within about 4 miles of the sea, as Denmead is, metal fixings wear faster and gales find any loose ridge or slate.

Do you cover smaller places like Denmead?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. It’s a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.

What does the report include?

A written report with photos, covering the condition of the gutter, the defects we found and what we recommend. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check; Premium adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable and structural analysis.

Do you survey at weekends?

Yes, weekend visits are possible as well as weekdays. Just ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form to arrange it.

How soon will I get the report?

It depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. The report is emailed to you.

Will you look at parapet and box gutters as well?

Yes, where it’s safe to see them. We look from vantage points, the roof space and the roof itself where safe, and by drone where it’s applicable.

What a gutter survey looks like in Denmead

Denmead lies within about 4 miles of the sea, so there is more wind and more salt in the air than further inland. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces, and driving rain gets into whatever gap is left. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first.

Take an older house close to Church of All Saints: old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs. Anyone responsible for a site like Denmead Junior School will know that its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale.

Denmead is about 2 miles north-west of Waterlooville, in Hampshire. We survey roofs in Denmead and the rest of Hampshire, as part of our work across London and South East England. We cover towns and villages across Hampshire, from the larger towns to small villages. We also survey roofs in Portsmouth.

Gutter surveys in PO7 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. Whether your property is on Ashling Park Road, Chestnut Close and The Orchard or a nearby road, we can help. What happens if roof problems are left?

Water spilling from a gutter runs down and soaks the wall below. Left for months, that can lead to damp inside, worn pointing and rotten timber. Finding the cause now typically keeps the fix smaller. Tradespeople may need to travel further to a smaller place like Denmead, so it is useful to plan roof work rather than call someone out in a hurry. Knowing early gives you time to get the right people in.
