Why it is worth a survey now in North End

Clearing gutters removes the debris, but it doesn’t tell you why a gutter overflows. Our survey also looks at falls, joints, brackets, outlets and downpipes, so you know whether there’s more to it. In an older home around North End, water from a roof defect can get into timber and plaster, which is far harder to put right than the roof fault itself.

A Basic Survey starts from £150, with VAT included. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400. We confirm the exact price before you book.

About our gutter survey in North End

A gutter needs a steady fall towards its outlet to drain properly. Sagging brackets and slipped joints leave water standing and overflowing where the gutter dips. We check the line of each run as far as we can see it and look at the brackets and downpipe clips. Recommendations are written down and prioritised by urgency where relevant. We survey valley gutters, downpipes and fascias and soffits, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are sagging gutters and loose brackets and soffits marked by water.

Trees around homes in smaller places like North End drop leaves, twigs and moss onto roofs and into gutters. Blocked gutters overflow and soak the walls below, and moss holds water against tiles. It is the kind of slow problem a roof report picks up early. Moss on the roof and weeds in the gutter are both easy to spot from ground level.

What you get is a clear record of the gutter on the day we saw it. It’s useful right away, and a good reference for later, such as when you want to compare after future work.

North End homes and their roofs

North End lies within about 1 mile of the sea, where sea air brings more salt and stronger wind than inland. Near the sea, metal fixings wear faster and loose pieces on a roof are more likely to lift, while driving rain finds any gap. If your home is older, it’s worth knowing whether it is listed or in a conservation area before planning roof work. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, and councils can also use Article 4 directions to control changes in conservation areas.

If you let a flat or house near Hilsea station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at. The streets around a church such as St. Mark’s are often among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs.

North End is about 1 mile north of Portsmouth, in Portsmouth. Roofs in North End get the same thorough look as anywhere else in Portsmouth. Across Portsmouth, we cover North End and the places around it.

We cover every part of the PO2 and PO1 postcode area for gutter surveys and the streets around it. Local streets include Knox Road, Croft Road and Kirby Road, and we cover them all. Close by, we survey roofs in Rudmore (1 mile south-west), Tipner (1 mile west), Portsmouth (1 mile south), Copnor (1 mile south-east) and Hilsea (1 mile north-east).

How the survey changes by roof type

Aluminium and other metal gutters

Metal gutters can suffer at joints and where different metals meet. Any leaks or corrosion we spot go in the report.

Fascias and soffits

Some older soffits may contain asbestos. Any we think could be are flagged so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check them before they’re disturbed.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

Freeholders and residents’ companies use a roof report to plan and budget.

For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. The report sets out what needs attention now and what can wait.

Your questions about gutter surveys in North End

Can a landlord with a rental near Hilsea station book a roof survey?

Yes. We survey roofs for landlords, letting agents and managing agents as well as owners. Just ring 07833 053749 or email us with the details, and we’ll talk through which survey suits.

Will you come out to North End?

We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.

Can a gutter survey explain damp on my walls?

The survey looks at whether rainwater is spilling onto the wall from overflows, leaking joints or loose downpipes. We can’t see inside walls, so the report covers what can be seen.

Is it a structural engineer’s report?

No. We note visible signs such as sagging or deflection, but we do not carry out calculations or give an engineer’s opinion. If we think you need an engineer, the report says so.

Do you look in the roof space?

Yes, where the survey calls for it and there is safe access. Inside, we look for damp, staining, gaps and sagging.

Do I need to be at home?

Not always. If we only need the outside, we can agree that beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.

Are you insured?

We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.

How the survey works

When we arrive, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you want to find out. After that, we look at everything we can see safely. Most surveys take about 1–2 hours for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. Parking around North End is usually easier than in a town centre, but mention lanes, gates or long drives. On bungalows and lower roofs, much can be seen from ground level, with the loft showing the underside.

  1. First, you tell us what you’ve seen, like overflows or damp.
  2. We look along the gutters, downpipes and fascias from ground level and from windows.
  3. Valley, parapet and box gutters are inspected as far as they can be seen safely.
  4. We look in the roof space, where there is safe access, for signs of water getting in.
  5. The findings are written up with photos and recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • Tell us where we can park nearby
  • Let us know about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors

Advice

Signs you need a gutter survey in North End

Gutter brackets work loose or corrode with age. A gutter full of wet debris is heavy, and that weight pulls sections out of line. Once the fall is lost, water sits at the low point and spills over.

Look out for signs like these:

  • Overflowing eaves gutters
  • Blocked outlets and hoppers
  • Rotten fascias or stained soffits
  • Cracked or loose downpipes

Homes near green spaces such as Alexandra Park can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall.
