Local roofs in Salehurst

In Sussex, older roofs are often handmade clay tile, frequently with tile-hanging on the walls below. Some old buildings in Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs, and oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses are part of East Sussex’s older buildings. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look. With Durhamford Manor about 3.7 miles south, Salehurst sits in an area with a long building history. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, like lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years.

Take an older house close to The Parish Church of St Mary: corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Salehurst Church of England Primary School, large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other. Landlords with a home close to Robertsbridge station may find that a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant.

Gutter surveys for homes and businesses in Salehurst

Eaves gutters at the front of a building are easy to spot, but many aren’t. Valley gutters between slopes, gutters behind parapet walls and box or secret gutters can overflow inside the building when they block. We check them as far as they can be seen safely, from ground level, from windows, from the roof space and from the roof where it’s safe. Hidden gutters are a common source of leaks inside. If you’ve noticed gutters that have fallen out of line and gutters packed with leaves or moss, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.

Somewhere as small as Salehurst, homes are often older cottages and farmhouses, with outbuildings and some newer houses. Older roofs may be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, often with chimneys that have stood a long time. We report on whatever is safely visible, and thatch is a specialist material. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs often need the most attention.

Nothing in the report is left vague: if work is needed, the report says so clearly, along with how urgent it is.

How the survey works

A survey visit follows a simple order: we listen to what’s been worrying you, inspect the roof from each safe vantage point, photograph what we find and make notes for the report. Most visits take between one and two hours for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. Somewhere as small as Salehurst, access is often the only tricky part. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.

  1. We start by hearing about any drips, overflows or damp patches.
  2. We look along the gutters, downpipes and fascias from the ground and from windows.
  3. Valley, parapet and box gutters are inspected as far as they can safely be seen.
  4. We look in the loft space, where there’s safe access, for signs of water getting in.
  5. The findings are written up with photos and recommendations.

How to prepare

  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch
  • Note where any stains or damp appear
  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed

Salehurst questions

How do I find out if my home in Salehurst is listed?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Can a landlord with a rental near Robertsbridge station book a roof survey?

Yes, rented property is part of what we cover. Just ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and tell us about the building, including who will give access on the day.

Can you survey a shared roof?

Yes, if the building owner or managing agent agrees access. We look at the parts we are given access to, and the report makes that clear.

What’s the price of a gutter survey?

Our packages start from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, inc. VAT. Just call 07833 053749 or send us an email for a price.

Will the survey check for asbestos?

No. We don’t test for asbestos. If rainwater goods or soffits look like they could contain asbestos, we note it and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.

Do you check valley and parapet gutters?

Yes, as far as they can be seen safely. We use the ground, windows, the loft space and the roof where it’s safe and a drone where applicable.

Will you check if gutters are causing damp inside?

Leaking gutters and downpipes are a common cause of damp walls, and the survey looks for that. If the cause looks like something else, the report says so, based on what we can see.

Different roofs, different checks

Aluminium and other metal gutters

Metal gutters are common on commercial buildings and some homes. Their joints and outlets still need checking.

Plastic (uPVC) gutters

Plastic rainwater systems are common on homes of many ages. Their joints can leak as the seals wear and brackets may drop under the weight of debris.

What affects the price in Salehurst

Survey packages start from £150, including VAT. The price for your roof depends on:

  • Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
  • The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
  • The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone

Prices quoted always include VAT, and the report isn’t charged as an extra. Gutter survey starts from £150, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.

Getting in touch

When you call or email, these details help:

  • The kind of building and roof involved
  • Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
  • Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
  • Your timetable, such as an exchange date

Not sure which survey you need? The easiest way is to call 07833 053749 or email us and describe the roof and why you want it surveyed. We will talk you through the options and what they cost.

Tips from our surveys

A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Some tips:

  • Check for spilling water in a downpour
  • Look for new stains on ceilings below valleys after rain
  • Ask for valleys and parapet gutters to be cleared too
  • Leave gutter checks at height to someone equipped for it

How quickly the report arrives depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. We email it to you once it’s done.

Get small faults like a dripping joint or loose downpipe sorted quickly. Left alone, they normally grow and spilled water harms brickwork and woodwork.

Why act early in Salehurst

Damp walls are sometimes blamed on the wrong thing. When rainwater goods are the source, treating the wall alone won’t solve it. A gutter survey helps rule the rainwater system in or out. For older village homes like those around Salehurst, the right replacement materials aren’t always easy to find quickly. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.
