How a gutter survey works in Wiggonholt
Gutters are typically fixed to fascia boards, so we look at the fascias and soffits too. Long-term overflowing can soften and rot timber boards and mark the soffits underneath. Older buildings, from before 2000, can have asbestos cement soffits, gutters or downpipes. We do not carry out asbestos testing, so we flag anything that might contain it for a specialist asbestos surveyor to check. If you’ve noticed gutters overflowing in heavy rain and leaking or loose downpipes, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.
Some older homes in villages like Wiggonholt are listed or in a conservation area. If yours is, re-roofing in different materials may need consent, so the council is the place to check. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Where a building is listed, matching the existing roof materials is often expected.
You receive the findings by email, ready to forward to whoever needs them. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

Before and after the survey
These tips come from what we see on roofs every week:
- Do not leave hidden gutters out of a clear-out
- Leave gutter checks at height to someone equipped for it
- Look for green streaks or damp patches on walls
- Make sure downpipe clips are holding
Report times depend on the package you choose: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. It is sent to you by email once it’s done.
Get the gutters cleared every year, and more often if trees overhang the roof. The best time is usually after the leaves have dropped. Clear gutters can carry water away as they should.
Should I look at the roof myself first?
What you can’t do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That is where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
What we look for on each type of roof
Box and secret gutters
A box gutter is built into the roof, often behind a parapet and when it overflows, water can get indoors. We inspect them as far as it’s safe to see them.
Fascias and soffits
Overflowing water stains soffits and rots timber. We check them along with the gutters.
Gutter surveys in Wiggonholt: local notes
Older houses across Sussex frequently have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging on their upper walls. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old Sussex buildings. Whatever the covering, it is often the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first. The wider area around Wiggonholt has a long history of building, with Parham House about 1.5 miles south. Older homes in the wider area frequently have features worth a closer look, like lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
If you live near a park such as Parham Park, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys, so outlets and downpipes are worth watching. If you own a rental within reach of Pulborough station, a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak. For an older house near a landmark like Wiggonholt Church, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look.

How the survey works
There isn’t much for you to do on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we will take it from there. A typical survey takes between one and two hours at a typical home, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. Somewhere like Wiggonholt needs a little journey planning: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there is safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.
- You let us know where you’ve seen overflows, drips or damp.
- The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are checked from ground level and windows.
- Valleys, parapets and box gutters are inspected where they can safely be seen.
- Where it is safe, we check the loft for signs of water.
- You receive a report with photos and recommendations.
Getting ready for the survey
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors

Your questions about gutter surveys in Wiggonholt
Do you survey roofs for landlords with property near Pulborough station?
Yes, that is a common request. Let us know whether a tenant or an agent will let us in, and the report can go straight to you or your agent.
Is Wiggonholt within the area you cover?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our area covers London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.
Is a Saturday or Sunday visit possible?
Yes, weekend visits are possible as well as weekdays. To book, ring 07833 053749 or email us.
Do you survey underground drains?
No, we do not carry out CCTV drain surveys. The survey covers gutters, outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows and note any sign that the drains need checking.
What’s in the report?
Written findings with photographs, explaining the condition of the gutter, any defects and our recommendations, in order of urgency where relevant. The Standard Survey adds moisture detection and a structural check, and the Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies and structural analysis.
Does the season matter for a gutter survey?
There is no wrong time. If water is already spilling over, book sooner rather than later, because the walls take the water.
Are you structural engineers?
No. Our survey isn’t a structural engineer’s report, and it doesn’t include calculations. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we will recommend one.
