How a landlord roof survey works in Haslar
Our landlord and block roof surveys cover Haslar and the rest of London and South East England. Time on site normally takes between one and two hours at a typical home; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. We inspect from the ground, vantage points, the roof space and the roof where it’s safe, and by drone where it is applicable. A written report with photos follows. We survey flat roofs on blocks, shared roofs and gutters and downpipes, and people most often book us about damaged pots and flaunching and gutters overflowing onto walls.
In a village or hamlet like Haslar, older cottages and farmhouses often sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Roofs there can be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, and chimney stacks are often old. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs frequently need the most attention.
The report is written in plain words, so you do not need to be a roofer to follow it. Photographs show what each point refers to.

Should I look at the roof myself first?
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it.
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
What happens on the day
Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. The inspection then takes between one and two hours for most houses, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. For a village or hamlet like Haslar, the journey is planned ahead of time: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect whatever is safely visible, inside and out.
- First, we confirm the roofs and areas to be surveyed.
- We confirm which flats and loft spaces we need to get into, and you arrange access.
- Each roof is checked as far as it can safely be seen, including from inside where possible.
- We photograph each defect and note how urgent it looks.
- The report sets out condition and recommendations to help you plan.

Signs you need a landlord roof survey in Haslar
Landlords need to plan spending on a building. Without a recent survey, it’s hard to know what the roof needs or when.
Here are some of the things we see frequently:
- Leaking joints at party walls
- Worn ridges, hips and verges
- Damaged pots and flaunching
- Standing water on a flat roof
If your house is among the older ones in the streets near St Francis, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs.
Before you book anyone
- What the survey will not cover
- Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
- Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance

Local roofs in Haslar
Haslar lies within about 1 mile of the sea, and places near the sea get more salt in the air and more wind than inland. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, and strong wind lifts anything already loose on a roof. Before planning roof work on an older home, find out whether it’s listed or in a conservation area. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, and councils can also use Article 4 directions to control changes in conservation areas.
If you own a rental within reach of Portsmouth Harbour station, a dated record of the roof is useful when planning maintenance across a let. For businesses in and around places like Tricorn Centre, a dated report on the roof is useful for planning and for any lease discussions.

FAQs for Haslar
Is my home in Haslar listed or in a conservation area?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
I let a flat near Portsmouth Harbour station. Can you check the roof?
Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for. You can ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and what you need, and we’ll talk through which survey suits.
Can you inspect my roof with a drone?
Yes, where applicable and safe. We are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. Drone inspection is part of the Drone Roof Survey and the Premium Survey, where it applies.
Do you need to get into the loft?
Where it’s relevant to the survey and there is safe access, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps.
Do you cover Haslar for landlord roof surveys?
Yes, we do. Haslar is part of the area we cover, and the service is the same as everywhere else we work.
Does the weather affect the survey?
It can, depending on the survey. Drones can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof and little wind. If the conditions aren’t right, we will talk to you about another date.
How many surveys have you done?
We have more than 20 years’ experience and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys.

What else we do in Haslar
Different roofs, different checks
Pitched roofs on houses and blocks
The edges and top of a pitched roof are exposed and get close attention.
Shared chimney stacks
A leaning or cracked stack on a shared building affects more than one owner and the report helps with that.
Why get it checked now?
Water that gets into one flat can affect others below. Spotting roof defects early helps protect the whole building. Around Haslar, older homes often have old roof timbers, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it is left.
Simple, low roofs take less time to survey than tall or complicated ones, and the package matters as well. The price is always agreed first.
