New roof snagging near Appleshaw

Different roofs, different checks

Underlay and ventilation

At the eaves, the underlay should run into the gutter so water drains away. We check it where it can be seen.

Slate roofs

Ridges, verges and valleys are looked at closely on new slate roofs from safe vantage points.

About our new roof snagging in Appleshaw

Building work can leave a mess behind. Offcuts, broken tiles and debris left in gutters or on lower roofs are noted, and for damage to other parts of the building. It’s all recorded with photos. Gutters full of offcuts can overflow in the next heavy rain, and cracked lower roofs can leak. It is easier to raise them while the job is fresh. If you’re worried about untidy or loose verge details and gaps at new flashings, we can find out what’s behind it, on new-build homes, new flat roofs and ridges and verges alike.

In a village or hamlet like Appleshaw, homes are often older cottages and farmhouses alongside a few newer houses. Village roofs can be clay tile, slate, stone or even thatch on some older buildings. Whether you are buying or have just had a roof replaced, each material has its own checks. What’s under the coverings, from old felt to the battens and nails, matters too.

Findings are set out part by part, from the coverings down to the gutters, each with a short note and a photograph. You will see the good as well as the bad.

FAQs for Appleshaw

Is Appleshaw within the area you cover?

We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.

Is Appleshaw in the area you cover?

Yes, Appleshaw is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

Will you go up on the roof?

Not always. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. We use safe viewpoints, the loft space and a drone where it applies.

Do you check new-build roofs?

Yes, new-build roofs are checked in the same way as replacement roofs. You get a photo report of any snags for you to pass to your builder.

How soon after the work should I book a snagging inspection?

Before the final payment is best, while the roofer is still on hand. Otherwise, book before your defects or warranty period runs out.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

Someone needs to let us in if we’re looking inside or in the loft. We will talk about access when booking.

Do you use drones?

Where it is applicable and safe, yes. We fly a sub-250g drone and we are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Drone inspection is part of the Drone Roof Survey and the Premium Survey, where applicable.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date, which helps when we look at the roof.

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

What this survey can’t tell you

Some things cannot be seen without opening up the roof, and that sets some limits:

  • Pricing the remedial work
  • How the roof will perform for years to come
  • Details hidden from sight

If you’re not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer. The full list of what we check.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Flashings and valleys
  • Loft conversions and dormers
  • Replacement roofs
  • New flat roofs
  • Ridges and verges
  • New-build homes

Why get it checked now?

Some faults only show when water gets in. An inspection before that point gives you a record of the roof as handed over. In a place like Appleshaw, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. It is worth including them in a survey before a winter does the damage.

Prices start from £150, including VAT. Basic starts from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, VAT included, and we’ll tell you which fits.

What you get with us

  • Packages from £150, inc. VAT
  • An independent look at the roof
  • Insured for professional indemnity and public liability
  • Visits on any day of the week

Buying a home or a new roof in Appleshaw

Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Whether you are buying or checking new roofing work, knowing the materials helps make sense of what the inspection finds. What can be done to an older roof may depend on listing or a conservation area. Your council and Historic England’s list will tell you where you stand, before anyone quotes for re-roofing.

If you live in an older home near Church of St Peter in the Wood, the roof may have had decades of patch repairs, and the survey shows where they are. If you let a flat or house near Andover station, a roof report gives you a clear picture before you buy or settle up with a roofer.

What affects the cost of new roof snagging

A few things affect what a survey costs:

  • Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
  • House, block, shop or office
  • The height of the building and how the roof can be seen safely
  • How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets

Simple, low roofs take less time to survey than tall or complicated ones, and the package matters as well. The price is always agreed first.

Getting in touch

Before you get in touch, it helps to have:

  • Where the property is, with the postcode
  • What’s prompted the survey
  • What kind of property and roof it is
  • Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them

Surveys can be booked for weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. To arrange a day that suits you, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

The survey, step by step

The visit normally starts outside and finishes in the loft: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the loft space where it can be reached. In total, it takes about one to two hours at a typical home, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. Older roofs in small places like Appleshaw can have low, tight loft spaces, so it is useful to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.

  1. We ask what work was done and when it was finished.
  2. The new coverings, ridge, hips and verges are inspected where it is safe to see them.
  3. We check valleys, flashings and gutters, and the underlay at the eaves where it’s visible.
  4. We look in the roof space, where there is safe access, and around the property for debris or damage.
  5. You get a photo report listing the snags we found.
