New roof snagging in Hunston
Our inspection covers the slates or tiles, ridges, verges, hips and valleys, along with the flashings and ventilation. We check the underlay at the eaves where it’s visible, and we look at the gutters too. You get a photo report of what we found. We also note debris left behind and any damage to other parts of the building. Common reasons to book are vents that weren’t fitted or are covered and damage to other parts of the building, across new-build homes, loft conversions and dormers and new flat roofs.
Some older homes in villages like Hunston are listed or sit in a conservation area. That can affect what materials a new roof may use, so check with the council and Historic England’s list. Whether you’re buying or signing off new roofing, it’s worth knowing where you stand. There are about 500,000 listed buildings and around 10,000 conservation areas in England.
Report times depend on the survey you book: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

What else we do in Hunston
New roof snagging around Hunston
Hunston is within about 3 miles of the coast, and places near the sea get more salt in the air and more wind than inland. Metal fixings and flashings corrode faster in salt air, and loose ridges, slates and tiles are the first to lift in a gale. Historic houses such as Goodwood House, about 4.5 miles north, show how far back building in the area around Hunston goes. If you own one of the older houses, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof.
If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near St Leodegar's Church, the roof may have had decades of patch repairs, and the survey shows where they are.
Hunston is about 2 miles south of Chichester, in West Sussex. We survey roofs in Hunston and the rest of West Sussex. Across West Sussex, we cover Hunston. There’s also a page for Portsmouth.

How the survey changes by roof type
Underlay and ventilation
At the eaves, the underlay should run into the gutter so water drains away. We check it where it is visible.
Flashings
Flashings seal the roof to walls and chimneys. We look at how they’re dressed, fixed and pointed.
Signs you need new roof snagging in Hunston
A roof is hard for most owners to see properly. Without an independent check, you are relying on what can be seen from ground level before you pay.
We are often asked to look at:
- Gutters or fascias damaged during the job
- Underlay at the eaves left exposed
- Debris left in gutters or valleys
- Broken coverings left on a new roof
If you own a rental within reach of Chichester station, it’s worth knowing a roof’s condition before you buy it, or before you sign off new roofing work on it.
What to check before booking
- Whether the price includes VAT
- Will the report include photos?
- How they’ll see the roof: from the ground, the loft, the roof or by drone
- Which limits apply to the survey
What new roof snagging doesn’t cover
Some things cannot be seen without opening up the roof, so a survey has limits:
- Legal advice on your contract
- Details hidden from sight
- Pricing the remedial work
If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll recommend the right survey. What a survey covers and does not.
Roof types and parts we check
- Loft conversions and dormers
- New flat roofs
- Ridges and verges
- New-build homes
- Replacement roofs
- Flashings and valleys
Can I check my roof myself?
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
What you can’t do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and a fall can be serious. That part is for a survey.
What happens on the day
The visit normally starts outside and finishes in the loft: outside views come first, then the loft space if there is safe access. In total, it takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, depending on how much new work there is to check. For a village or hamlet like Hunston, the journey is planned beforehand: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect whatever is safely visible, inside and out.
- We agree what to focus on, such as a payment date or a warranty period ending.
- The roof is inspected from the ground, vantage points and the roof where safe.
- We work through ridges, verges, valleys and flashings.
- Debris and damage to other parts are recorded.
- You receive a report to share with your roofer.
How to prepare
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with the freeholder or managing agent
- Point out any leaks or damp patches

Questions from Hunston
Is the coastal weather around Hunston hard on roofs?
Often, yes. Within about 3 miles of the sea, as Hunston is, metal fixings wear faster and gales find any loose ridge or slate.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Hunston?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.
Do you look in the loft space?
Where it is relevant to the survey and there’s safe access, yes. Please clear anything stored under the hatch.
Which days do you carry out surveys?
Surveys run on weekdays and at weekends. To arrange a date, call 07833 053749 or send us an email.
How long will you be on site?
Most house visits take about 1–2 hours with commercial roofs nearer 3–4 hours.
Can you settle a dispute with my builder?
No. Our job is to report on the roof as we find it. Any dispute is between you and your roofer or builder, and the report gives you a clear record to refer to.
Can you see the fixings under the tiles?
No, we report on what’s visible. Most fixings sit out of sight under the coverings so we focus on what can be seen.
