About our roof survey in Hunston
Three packages cover most roofs: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, with VAT included. The Basic Survey gives a visual inspection, photos and written recommendations. The higher packages add more checks, with moisture detection and a structural check, and on Premium, thermal imaging and a drone where applicable. Each one comes with a written report. If you’re worried about water stains on rafters and ceiling joists and crumbling chimney pointing or cracked flaunching, we can find out what’s behind it.
Village roofs often face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Older walls take a long time to dry once water gets in. A written report sets out what to deal with and in what order. Lead flashings and old chimney stacks are frequently where weather gets in first.
The written findings come by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

Can I check my roof myself?
A lot can be seen from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Don’t go up yourself.
Local roofs in Hunston
Hunston is within about 3 miles of the coast, where sea air brings more salt and stronger wind than inland. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, and strong wind lifts anything already loose on a roof, while driving rain finds any gap. If your survey includes the drone, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.
If you let a flat or house near Chichester station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at. If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near St Leodegar's Church, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine. Goodwood House, about 4.5 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Hunston. If your home is one of the older ones, the roof may have been repaired many times, and the survey records how each part is holding up.
Hunston is about 2 miles south of Chichester, in West Sussex. Hunston is one of many places we visit across West Sussex, for homes and businesses alike. We cover towns and villages across West Sussex, from the larger towns to small villages. We also survey roofs in Portsmouth.

Within a short drive, we also cover Bognor Regis (4 miles east), Selsey (5 miles south), Littlehampton (11 miles east), Emsworth (8 miles west), Rustington (12 miles east) and Angmering (13 miles east).

Hunston: your questions answered
Can a landlord with a rental near Chichester station book a roof survey?
Yes. We survey roofs for landlords, letting agents and managing agents as well as owners. You can ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and what you need, and we will talk through which survey suits.
Is my home in Hunston listed or in a conservation area?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning, with the freeholder or managing agent. Mention it when you contact us and we’ll plan the survey around it.
Is Hunston in your area?
Yes. Our area covers London and South East England, Hunston included.
How do I arrange a roof survey in Hunston?
To arrange a survey, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address, the type of property and what’s prompted the survey. We’ll confirm the price and find a day that suits.
Do you look in the loft space?
If it is needed and safe to reach, yes. We look for staining, damp, daylight and signs of movement, as far as the space allows.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
Not necessarily. If we only need the outside, we can agree that beforehand, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.
How it works
On the day, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you’d like to know. After that, we look at everything we can see safely, using the ground, windows, the loft and a drone where applicable. Most surveys take an hour or two for an ordinary house roof, and longer if there are extensions, dormers or several chimneys. In a hamlet or village like Hunston, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions are welcome. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.

What we look for on each type of roof
Chimney stacks
Our chimney check is a visual inspection of the stack, and it is not a flue or gas safety check. We will tell you if the flue needs a specialist.
Flat roof coverings
Felt flat roofs frequently last around 15 to 20 years, EPDM rubber around 30 to 50 and GRP up to about 30. We check how the covering is wearing.
Surveys for landlords and agents in Hunston
Where a roof is shared: we need access agreed with the building owner or managing agent. Tell us about it as you book and we will plan the survey around it.
An agent can book and manage the survey for a landlord, and the report can go to both. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.
Tips that help
Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They apply to most roofs:
- Check we can open the loft hatch
- Have details of recent roof work to hand
- Include dormers, porches and garages as you book
- Keep the report with your property records
File the report with your other home documents. It gives you something to compare against later, and buyers may ask about the roof when you sell.
After a storm, check the roof from the garden and the street. Fragments of slate or tile on the ground mean something has shifted. Prompt repairs stop small problems growing.

Honest limits
A survey is a proper look at the roof, but it can’t do everything. The main limits are:
- What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
- A full building survey of the property
- An exact number of years the roof has left
If you’re not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book. What our survey covers.
