  • Loose chimney pots
  • Ridge tiles that have lifted or moved

Roof surveys near Emsworth

Do you need a roof survey in Emsworth?

Slates and tiles frequently outlast the fixings that hold them. ‘Nail fatigue’ is common on slate roofs: the nails rust and the slates slide. On tiled roofs, battens and pegs can rot.

We are often asked to look at:

  • Gaps in the roof where coverings have gone
  • Debris building up in roof valleys
  • Crumbling chimney pointing or cracked flaunching
  • Water stains on rafters and ceiling joists

For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St James, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs.

What to check before booking

  • Whether VAT is in the quoted price
  • Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
  • How soon the report will arrive
  • How they’ll see the roof: from the ground, the loft, the roof or by drone

What’s in a roof survey

About our roof survey in Emsworth

The report is written for you, in plain language. Every issue comes with photos and a written recommendation, and where it is relevant we say what’s urgent and what can wait. With the Standard Survey you also get moisture detection and a structural check. Premium adds thermal imaging, a drone inspection where applicable and a same-day report. Reports are sent by email. We’re often asked to look into slipped, cracked or missing slates and tiles and blocked, sagging or leaking gutters, on the roof space, ridges, hips and valleys and lead flashings.

Around Emsworth, gardens, hedges and nearby trees can mean leaves and moss end up on roofs and in gutters. Once gutters and outlets block, water spills over and soaks the walls. A report spots that kind of slow problem before it becomes damp inside. Moss on the roof and weeds in the gutter are both easy to spot from the ground.

How fast the report arrives depends on the package: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

What we look for on each type of roof

Lead flashings and valleys

Many older houses have lead in their valleys and hidden gutters. Worn or split lead lets water straight in.

Chimney stacks

We check the stack itself, and it isn’t a flue or gas safety check. We will tell you if the flue needs a specialist.

What happens if roof problems are left?

Without a survey, you’re guessing at what the roof needs. That can lead to the wrong work being done, or to a real problem being missed. We tell you what’s really needed. Around Emsworth, leaves and moss in gutters lead to overflowing water and damp walls, particularly where trees overhang. It’s easy to sort the cause early and slow to dry a damp wall.

The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where applicable, which starts from £400, inc. VAT. We can help you choose the package that fits what you need to know.

DIY checks: what’s safe

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

Emsworth questions

Does being near the coast affect roofs in Emsworth?

Near the coast, roofs face more wind and more salt than further inland. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces.

I let a flat near Emsworth station. Can you check the roof?

Yes. We survey roofs for landlords, letting agents and managing agents as well as owners. Just call 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the details.

Will you check the loft?

If it’s needed and safe to reach, yes. Inside, we look for damp, staining, gaps and sagging.

When will the report arrive?

Premium reports arrive the same day, Standard within 24 to 48 hours and Basic within 48 hours. Each report includes photos.

Can you inspect a terraced or semi-detached roof?

Yes, we inspect your part of the roof. Next door’s roof is only inspected as far as we can see it. Shared stacks and upstands are looked at from your property.

Is a roof survey the same as a structural survey?

No. Our survey looks at the condition of the roof, and the Standard and Premium packages include a structural check. It doesn’t include structural calculations, which need an engineer.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

Our cover is professional indemnity plus public liability.

The survey, step by step

After the inspection, everything we found is written up as a photo-illustrated written report, emailed to you. As for time on site, it usually takes about 1–2 hours for a house, and more on a big or complicated roof. A visit to Emsworth is planned like any other: the time, the access and where to park are agreed beforehand. Weekday and weekend visits are both possible. If there are outbuildings or garages you want looked at, mention them.

  1. You tell us the address, the type of roof and what’s worrying you.
  2. We agree a date, including weekends if that suits you.
  3. Outside, we inspect from ground level, windows and other safe vantage points, and from the roof where safe.
  4. We then look in the loft for damp, staining and the condition of the underlay.
  5. You receive the report with photos and recommendations, prioritised by urgency.

Advice

Landlord and commercial surveys in Emsworth

An agent can book and manage the survey for a landlord, with the report sent to whoever needs it. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.

If the property is let, the agent or a tenant can let us in. Surveys run on any day of the week, which can make access easier.

Roofs, chimneys and gutters in Emsworth

The coast is about 1 mile or less from Emsworth, so there’s more wind and more salt in the air than further inland. Near the sea, metal fixings wear faster and loose pieces on a roof are more likely to lift, while driving rain finds any gap. If the drone is used for your survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.

Warblington Castle lies about 1.3 miles west, so building around Emsworth goes back a long way. On a period home nearby, the survey separates sound original work from tired later repairs. If you look after a building like St James Church of England Controlled Primary School, its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale.
