About our gutter survey in Emsworth
This survey covers rainwater above ground, from the gutters down to where the downpipes meet the ground. It is not a CCTV drain survey and we cannot see inside buried drains. If the problem looks like a blocked or broken drain below ground, the report will say so, with a suggestion to book a separate drain survey. Problems above ground, from split hoppers to leaking downpipes, are photographed and noted. We survey fascias and soffits, parapet and box gutters and outlets and hoppers, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are choked outlets or hopper heads and gutters packed with leaves or moss.
Around Emsworth, gardens, hedges and nearby trees can mean leaves and moss end up on roofs and in gutters. Once gutters and outlets block, water spills over and soaks the walls, and moss holds water against tiles. It’s the kind of slow problem a roof report picks up early. Plants growing from a gutter or moss on the tiles are signs worth noting from ground level.
After the visit, you get a written report with photographs, sent by email. It explains the condition of the gutter, the defects we found and what we recommend.

Roofs, chimneys and gutters in Emsworth
Emsworth is within about 1 mile of the coast, and being near the sea means more wind and salt than a roof inland would face. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces, while driving rain finds any gap. The wider area around Emsworth has a long history of building, with Warblington Castle about 1.3 miles west. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters.
For site and facilities teams at buildings like St James Church of England Controlled Primary School, a written record of a large roof helps plan work for the holidays rather than in term time. Living close to Eames Farm is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall.
Emsworth is about 2 miles east of Havant, in West Sussex. If you’re in Emsworth, booking works exactly as it does anywhere else: a call or an email, a price, then a date. Emsworth is one of the towns and villages in West Sussex where we work for gutter surveys. We also survey roofs in Portsmouth.
Surveys in PO10 are booked the same way as anywhere else. That includes homes and businesses on High Street, Beacon Square and Seagull Lane and the roads around them. Being close to the A27 and A259, Emsworth is easy for us to reach. Neighbouring places we cover for gutter surveys include Lumley (1 mile east), Westbourne (1 mile north-east), Denvilles (1 mile west), Southbourne (1 mile east) and Warblington (2 miles south-west). Larger places within reach include Bognor Regis (12 miles east), Chichester (7 miles east), Selsey (10 miles south-east), Portfield (8 miles east), Yapton (14 miles east) and East Wittering (7 miles south-east).

Before and after the survey
Getting the most from a gutter survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Some tips:
- Look for new stains on ceilings below valleys after rain
- Note any damp stains below the gutters
- Leave gutter checks at height to someone equipped for it
- Look for downpipes coming loose
Where the evidence points to drains below ground, the report says so, so a drain survey can be arranged. We also note anything else we spot on the roof while we are there.
Look at the gutters from indoors or the ground when it pours. Overflows and dripping joints are a sign to act before damage builds up.
When to book a survey in Emsworth
Many people get in touch after seeing water pour over a gutter in heavy rain. Others spot damp patches, ceiling stains or green marks on the walls. A survey helps show where the water is coming from before it causes more harm.
Most people get in touch when they’ve noticed something like this:
- Rotten fascias or stained soffits
- Hoppers and outlets full of debris
- Joints that drip after rain
- Sagging gutters and loose brackets
If you own one of the older houses in the streets near Church of St James, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- Whether the price includes VAT
- What the report includes, and whether it has photographs
- Whether you can ask questions once you have the report
- How much experience they have with roofs like yours
Why it is worth a survey now in Emsworth
Overflowing water soaks the walls under the gutter. Given time, it can cause damp patches, damaged pointing and rot in nearby timber. Finding the cause now normally keeps the fix smaller. Arranging work in a smaller place like Emsworth is easier with notice than in an emergency. Knowing early gives you time to get the right people in.
The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where it applies, which starts from £400, with VAT included. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.

What happens on the day
You do not need to do much on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we’ll get on with the inspection. A typical survey takes about 1–2 hours for most houses, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. Some parts of a survey depend on the weather, so a visit to Emsworth is booked with the forecast in mind: drone flights and thermal imaging need the right conditions, while a look from ground level and the loft can go ahead in most weather.
- First, we agree the areas to focus on.
- We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
- Outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows are inspected.
- Fascias, soffits and the walls below are looked at for signs of overflow.
- You get photos and written recommendations, prioritised where relevant.
Before we arrive
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
