What a survey costs

All our prices include VAT. What changes the price is:

  • The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
  • The roof’s overall size
  • Building height and the viewpoints available

Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so the price reflects that. The price is confirmed before you book.

What we need to know

When you call or email, these details help:

  • The property’s address and postcode
  • Dates you’re working to, like exchange
  • Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
  • Any photos you have, taken from ground level or a window

If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Take them safely from ground level or a window; never climb up to get a better view. To send them or to book, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email.

New roof snagging in Jury's Gap

Householders book snagging after a re-roof or roof replacement and some new-build owners want their roof looked at. Whatever the roof, we inspect as far as it can safely be seen, from the ground, vantage points, the roof space and the roof where safe. You then get a written report with photos to share with your roofer. If you’re worried about broken coverings left on a new roof and missing or blocked roof ventilation, we can find out what’s behind it.

For a small place like Jury's Gap, the visit is planned like any other: it just means planning the journey and access beforehand. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages with roofs you’d like looked at when booking, so the visit can be planned around them. Buyers and owners of new roofs get the same approach as anywhere. Weekday and weekend visits are both available.

Every survey ends with a written report, with photographs, sent by email. It explains the condition of the new roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

How it works

There is not much for you to do on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we will get on with the inspection. The survey itself takes about one to two hours for a typical new house roof, longer where the roof is large or complicated. Somewhere as small as Jury's Gap, access is frequently the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.

  1. First, you let us know what the roofer did and any concerns you have.
  2. We check the tiles or slates, ridges, hips and verges from safe vantage points.
  3. We check valleys, flashings and gutters, and the underlay at the eaves where it is visible.
  4. The loft space is looked at where safe, along with any mess or damage left after the work.
  5. The snags are written up with photos for you to share with your roofer.

Preparing for the visit

  • Point out any leaks or damp patches
  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
  • For flats, check roof access has been agreed

  • Untidy or loose verge details
  • Gutters blocked by building debris

What a roof survey includes

Buying a home or a new roof in Jury's Gap

Jury's Gap is within about 1 mile of the coast, where sea air brings more salt and stronger wind than inland. Corroded clips and nails and lifted ridge pieces are typical of exposed roofs near the sea. About 4.4 miles west lies Lamb House, a reminder of how long the area around Jury's Gap has been built on. Older homes in the wider area frequently have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.

What we look for on each type of roof

Ridges, hips and verges

Verge details can be rushed and get a close look.

Underlay and ventilation

The underlay should be dressed into the gutter at the eaves to carry water off. We check it where it can be seen.

Questions from Jury's Gap

Is my home in Jury's Gap listed or in a conservation area?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.

Does being near the coast affect roofs in Jury's Gap?

Places near the sea get more wind and more salt in the air than inland, and both are hard on roofs. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces.

What does a new roof inspection include?

We check the coverings, ridges, verges, hips, valleys and flashings plus gutters, ventilation and visible underlay at the eaves. We also look for debris left behind and damage to other parts.

Can you settle a dispute with my builder?

No. We report on what we see. A disagreement about the work is between you and them and our report gives you an independent record.

Will you check every nail and clip?

No. We inspect what can be seen without opening up the roof so hidden fixings are not visible to us. The report says what could and couldn’t be seen.

How experienced are you?

We have more than 20 years’ experience and have completed over 5,000 surveys.

What’s the best way to book?

Just phone 07833 053749 or email us. After a few questions, we confirm the price and fix a day.

DIY checks: what’s safe

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey.

A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.

Practical tips

A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Some tips:

  • Walk round the house to look for knock-on damage
  • Keep warranty papers safe
  • Book snagging before the final payment
  • Look for debris left in gutters from ground level

You receive a written report with photos of each snag and recommendations, prioritised by urgency where relevant. Pass it on to your roofer or builder.

Note the end date of any defects or warranty period. Book a check well before it so snags can be raised.
