Southrope Pre-Purchase Roof Survey
Need a pre-purchase roof survey in Southrope? We can help, with a written report you can act on. Book a weekday or weekend visit.
- Patch repairs that may hide an ongoing problem
- Roof slopes that look uneven or sagging
- Standing water on a flat extension roof
Should I look at the roof myself first?
A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.
What you cannot do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and a fall can be serious. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.
Pre-purchase roof surveys for homes and businesses in Southrope
Buyers in Southrope and right across London and South East England use our pre-purchase roof survey. From terraced and semi-detached homes to detached houses and flats, the roof gets the same careful look. We tell you what’s sound, what needs attention and how urgent it is. We’re insured for professional indemnity and public liability, with more than 20 years’ experience behind us. To arrange a survey, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email. If you’ve noticed loose pots and cracked flaunching and standing water on a flat extension roof, we can find out what’s behind it, on the roof space, gutters and downpipes and clay and concrete tiles alike.
For a small place like Southrope, the visit is planned like any other: the journey, parking and access are simply agreed beforehand. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages with roofs you’d like looked at as you book, so the visit can be planned around them. Buyers and owners of new roofs get the same approach as anywhere. Visits can be booked seven days a week.
Every survey ends with a written report, with photos, sent by email. It sets out the condition of the roof, any defects and our written recommendations.

What happens on the day
Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof, but as a rough guide the survey takes roughly 1–2 hours for most houses, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. If you have questions on the day, just ask. Somewhere like Southrope needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view, inside and out.
- Once your offer is accepted, you let us know the address and when you hope to exchange.
- We arrange access with you, the agent or the seller, including the loft.
- We start outside, looking at the roof from ground level and from vantage points.
- Inside, we check the loft space and look at the roof from windows.
- The report is emailed with photos and recommendations, ready to use before exchange.
Preparing for the visit
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch
- If you are buying, check with the agent that we can get in
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors

Questions from Southrope
Do you cover smaller places like Southrope?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our area covers London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when booking.
Is drone flying allowed in Southrope?
It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Lasham Airfield is about 1 mile away, so we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before any flight. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain.
When is the best time to have the roof checked when buying?
The sooner after your offer is accepted, the better. You need the report before you exchange, because after that the roof is yours to deal with.
How quickly will I get the report?
The Premium Survey has a same-day report, Standard 24 to 48 hours and Basic within 48 hours. Reports are emailed with photos included.
How long does the survey visit take?
The visit normally takes about one to two hours at the house you’re buying, depending on its size and how much of the roof can be seen. We will confirm what to expect when we arrange the visit.
Do I need a roof survey if I’m having a RICS survey?
It is your choice, but the two do different jobs. A RICS home survey covers the whole building, while ours looks only at the roof, in more detail. Ours sits alongside a RICS survey rather than replacing it.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first. Mention it when you contact us and we will plan the survey around it.

Common roof problems in Southrope
Many roofs have had quick fixes over the years. Bitumen painted over a flashing, mortar where lead should be, or a few tiles that don’t match can be signs that something has leaked before. We note what we see so you can ask about it.
Signs worth acting on include:
- Lead that has worked loose at a wall or chimney
- Chimney mortar that has eroded
- Ponding, blisters or splits on a flat roof
- Gaps where slates or tiles have come loose
For landlords with property near Alton station, the roof is worth checking before you add another property to a portfolio or pay a roofer in full.
Before you book any roof surveyor
- Which limits apply to the survey
- Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
- What insurance they carry
- How long the report takes to arrive
What a survey costs
What a survey costs depends on the time and equipment it needs. The main factors are:
- If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
- The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
- The size of the roof
A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package matters as well. We will give you the figure before anything is booked.
What to let us know when you get in touch
These details help when you contact us:
- Any photos you have, taken from ground level or a window
- Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
- The style of property, from a terrace to a block
- What’s prompted the survey
Photos help, if you have them. Pictures from the ground or a window are fine, and please don’t climb up for a closer look. To send them or to book, ring 07833 053749 or email us.
How the survey changes by roof type
Natural slate
Good slate is one of the longest-lasting roof coverings, but the nails holding it corrode long before that. When slates start to slip, corroded nails are often the reason.
Gutters and parapets
The rainwater system keeps water off the walls. We check for blockages, leaking joints and sagging runs.
For landlords and managing agents
Any of our surveys can be booked by landlords, agents and building managers in Southrope. To discuss a property or a block, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
Freeholders and residents’ companies use a roof report to plan and budget, putting the urgent items at the top.
Pre-purchase roof surveys in Southrope: local notes
Lasham Airfield is about 1 mile from Southrope. If your survey includes the drone, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying. A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Material and age explain a lot of what turns up on the day, whether the roof is old or brand new.
Historic houses such as Hall Place, about 3.1 miles south, show how far back building around Southrope goes. If you’re buying an older home nearby, it’s worth knowing whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before you plan any re-roofing. Take an older house close to Church of St. Mary: older patch repairs can hide behind a tidy front slope, and the survey looks past them.
