Thermal roof surveys for Southrope homes and businesses

Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Southrope

Our thermal survey records how the surface temperature varies across your roof. The patterns can suggest wet insulation, gaps in insulation or places where heat is getting out. It’s important to know that the camera shows temperature, not water, so findings are checked with moisture readings. It comes as part of our Premium Survey, from £400. The report also notes the conditions on the day, since they affect what the camera can show. We’re often asked to look into cold spots on ceilings under the roof and moisture around outlets and upstands, on insulated roof spaces, commercial roofs and ceilings below the roof.

Older buildings in small places like Southrope may be listed or in a conservation area. A look by drone or thermal camera doesn’t touch the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care, before anyone decides what work it needs. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

After the visit, you get a written report with photos, sent by email. It sets out the condition of the roof, any defects and our written recommendations.

Checking the roof from ground level

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from ground level and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry, as it helps us focus the survey.

The survey, step by step

We do not take risks to get a closer look. Everything that can safely be seen is inspected, and anything we can’t see is noted in the report. The survey normally takes between one and two hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. Somewhere as small as Southrope, access is frequently the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Weekday and weekend visits are available.

  1. We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
  2. The weather and surface conditions are recorded.
  3. We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
  4. We back up the thermal patterns with moisture readings.
  5. You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.

Southrope questions

Is my home in Southrope listed or in a conservation area?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Is drone flying allowed in Southrope?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Lasham Airfield is about 1 mile away, so we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before any flight. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather, and the rest of the survey doesn’t depend on the drone.

What’s the best way to book?

The quickest way is to ring 07833 053749 or email us. Give us the address and a few details about the roof, and we will suggest the right survey. We survey on weekdays and at weekends.

What happens after the survey?

The report comes by email, and you decide the next step: use it with a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent.

What insurance do you have?

Every survey is covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance, and details are available on request.

How experienced are you?

More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years.

Is this an asbestos survey?

No. We can flag materials that might contain asbestos, but confirming it is a job for a specialist asbestos surveyor. It may be present in buildings built or refurbished before 2000.

Thermal roof surveys in Southrope: local notes

A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Many roofs like these cannot be judged properly from the pavement, and that is where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place. With Hall Place about 3.1 miles south, Southrope sits in an area with a long building history. If yours is one of the older homes, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.

Tips that help

Nothing here needs a ladder. A few suggestions:

  • Ask us about the forecast if rain is expected
  • Heat the home normally on the days before
  • Use the report as a baseline for later checks
  • Let us know where and when you’ve seen damp or stains

Once we’ve been, the thermal images, photos and readings go into a single report. We explain what each image may mean, alongside what we recommend. Premium reports are sent the same day.

Watch for new damp patches on ceilings beneath the roof. Early action keeps insulation from staying wet.

When to book a survey in Southrope

Cold rooms under a roof, or high heating bills, lead some people to ask about heat loss. Gaps in loft insulation and poorly insulated roof areas can show up on the camera, particularly when there is a clear difference between inside and outside.

It’s worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:

  • Ceilings that feel colder in places
  • Heat escaping through the roof
  • Leaks that are hard to trace
  • Damp patches with no obvious cause

For an older house near a landmark like Church of St. Mary, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Whether you can ask questions once you have the report
  • Are they insured for the work?
  • How they plan to inspect the roof safely
  • Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA

What to expect from a roof survey

Why it’s worth a survey now in Southrope

Thermal images can suggest the extent of wet areas without cutting into the roof. It helps when deciding whether to patch an area or replace the roof. Around Southrope, older homes often have old roof timbers, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it’s left.

Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where it applies) come with the Premium Survey, from £400 with VAT included. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.

How the survey changes by roof type

Pitched slate and tile roofs

On pitched roofs, slates and tiles over a ventilated space can mask what’s happening underneath. We combine the images with an inspection from the loft where there is safe access.

Felt and asphalt flat roofs

Felt and asphalt roofs often show wet areas as patches that differ from the rest. Moisture readings are used to check them.
