Roof leak investigation in Oving
Some leaks only appear in certain weather. Wind-driven rain, an overflowing gutter or snow melt may be what triggers it. Notes on when it leaks, and what the weather was doing, help us, along with any photos you’ve taken. We look for the clues it leaves behind, like tide marks, stained timbers and damp underlay. Moisture detection shows which materials are still damp. We survey chimney stacks, slate and tile slopes and valleys and parapet gutters, and common reasons people get in touch are staining where a gutter or parapet meets the wall and leaks that appear only in driving rain.
Being in a small place like Oving makes no difference to how a leak or storm damage is looked at: we simply plan the journey and access ahead. It helps to know where the water appears, in what weather, and what you’ve seen outside, along with any repairs done before. Photos of the stain and of the roof from outside are helpful too.
You receive the findings by email, ready to forward to whoever needs them. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

Oving: your questions answered
How do I find out if my home in Oving is listed?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Do you cover smaller places like Oving?
Yes. Oving is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We survey roofs across London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there as you book.
What happens next?
You’ll receive the report by email, and what you do next is up to you: raise it with a seller, send it to an insurer, brief a roofer or share it with a managing agent.
How should I prepare for the leak investigation?
Keep a note of when it leaks. Clear access to the loft. Keep away from any light or socket that water is reaching.
Why isn’t the leak directly above the stain?
Because water travels. It can follow a timber or the underlay a long way first, so the entry point is frequently well away from the mark. That is why we trace the route rather than patching above the stain.
Do I need to be at home?
Not always. If we only need the outside, we can agree that ahead of time, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.
How do I arrange a roof leak investigation in Oving?
Simply ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address. We will ask a few questions, confirm the price and agree a date, weekday or weekend.
How the survey works
We work from the outside in: outside views come first, then the roof space if there is safe access. In total, it takes between one and two hours for a house, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. Somewhere like Oving needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there is safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.
- We help you choose the package that suits the leak.
- We agree a date, including weekends.
- We inspect inside and out, starting from the stain.
- Moisture detection and thermal imaging are used where your package includes them and they help.
- You get photos, the likely cause and clear recommendations.
How to prepare
- Leave side gates unlocked
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with the freeholder or managing agent

What happens if roof problems are left?
Lingering damp encourages mould on ceilings and walls. Once mould takes hold, it is harder to clear. Finding the leak comes first. Matching old materials, such as handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. That is one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.
One thing that affects the price is the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all including VAT. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.
Why us?
- Independent findings on the roof’s condition
- 5,000+ roofs surveyed
- Thermal imaging and drone inspection where they help
- Drone flown under a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID

What we look for on each type of roof
Valleys
A valley leak can appear well away from the valley inside. We trace the route from the loft where there’s safe access.
Chimney stacks
Water that gets in at the top can show up lower down. Unused flues with open pots can let rain straight in.
Should I look at the roof myself first?
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery. That’s where a survey comes in.
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
Wind, rain and roofs in Oving
The coast is about 5 miles or less from Oving, and places near the sea get more salt in the air and more wind than inland. Wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces, and driving rain finds any gap they leave. With Goodwood House about 2.4 miles north, Oving sits in an area with a long building history. If yours is one of the older homes, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof.
Take an older house close to The Parish Church of St Andrew: leaks on older roofs often start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks. If you let a flat or house near Chichester station, a clear finding on where water gets in helps you brief a roofer right away. If you look after a building such as Westbourne House School, a leak through a large roof is frequently found some distance from where the water shows inside.
Oving is about 3 miles east of Chichester, in West Sussex. In Oving, as across West Sussex, every roof gets the same careful survey. Oving is one of the towns and villages in West Sussex where we work for roof leak investigations. Our Portsmouth page covers surveys nearby.
