About our roof leak investigation in Whitehill
Our roof leak investigations cover Whitehill and the wider South East. Surveys are carried out on weekdays and at weekends. We look inside and out, at flashings, valleys, chimneys, gutters and flat roof details. You get a written report with photos and recommendations. If water is coming in now, catch it in a bucket and keep it away from lights and sockets, then ring 07833 053749 or send us an email to arrange a visit. If you are worried about water that shows only in certain storms and water marks that spread in wet weather, a survey will tell you what’s going on.
Around Whitehill, chimneys on older homes are a common source of leaks, through worn flaunching, failed pointing or lifted flashings. Damp on a chimney breast is not always rain from above, which is why it is worth tracing properly. The stack, its flashings and the loft space beside it are all worth checking.
The written findings come by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

Practical tips
Here are a few things we’d tell any owner:
- Do not touch fittings that water is reaching
- Leave roof access to professionals
- Record whether it leaks in every downpour or only some
- Mention any plumbing above the damp area
Keep the report after the work is done. If the leak returns, it’s a useful record of what was found.
After a downpour, look in the roof space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. Watch for water marks, wet underlay and damp wood. Photograph anything new.

What happens on the day
We’ll ask a few questions first, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. Then the inspection itself takes about 1–2 hours for most homes, though a hard-to-trace leak can take longer. Being in a smaller place like Whitehill does not change how the visit works: we look from the ground, from windows, from the loft and from the roof where it’s safe. Point out any stains, cracks or loose pieces you’ve spotted.
- We help you choose the package that suits the leak.
- We agree a date, including weekends.
- The investigation works from the stain back to the roof.
- Where it’s useful and included, we take moisture readings and use thermal imaging.
- You get photos, the likely cause and clear recommendations.
Before the survey
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
- For flats, make sure roof access has been agreed
- Point out any leaks or damp patches

Advice
What we can’t see
This is not a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:
- Faults hidden behind ceilings or boarding
- Leaks that only appear in weather we cannot recreate
- Water from pipes, tanks or heating systems
If you’re not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book. What our survey covers.
What we check
- Rooflights and dormers
- The roof space
- Flat roof details
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Lead flashings
- Chimney stacks
- Slate and tile slopes
Can I check my roof myself?
It helps to keep a record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Share it with us when you book and it will help the survey.
You can learn a lot from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
Roof leak investigations around Whitehill
An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. To find out, check Historic England’s list and ask the council about conservation areas. Re-roofing in different materials may need permission there. A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Different coverings let water in at different points, which shapes where the search starts.
If you own one of the older houses in the streets near St Mark's Sacred Church, water on an older roof tends to find its way in at the lead, the valleys or the chimney. Take a building like Woodlea Primary School: on a building that size, finding the source of a drip means looking well beyond the stain. If you let a flat or house near Liphook station, a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over.

Different roofs, different checks
Lead flashings
Water from a failed flashing can travel down the wall or along a rafter. That’s why we check the flashings near a stain, not just the one directly above.
Parapet and box gutters
A butterfly roof drains to a central valley gutter. Problems there often show in the rooms on the top floor.
Whitehill questions
Is my home in Whitehill listed or in a conservation area?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Do you cover smaller places like Whitehill?
Yes, Whitehill is covered. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned ahead of time.
Do you use thermal imaging to find leaks?
Where conditions suit, it can. The best results come after a sunny day, on a dry roof with little wind. Wet insulation holds heat longer than dry, which can show up on the image. We always check what it shows with moisture readings.
Are you insured?
Every survey is covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance, and we can provide details if a managing agent needs them.
How quickly is the report sent?
Report times are set by the package. Basic is within 48 hours, Standard is 24–48 hours and Premium is the same day. If you have a deadline, such as an exchange date, let us know when booking.
Is the repair included in the leak investigation?
This service finds and reports the cause, and the repair is separate. The report gives any roofer a clear brief.
Can a leak be traced on a dry day?
In most cases, yes. Damp materials can be found without rain. For leaks that only happen in certain storms, we report the most likely routes.
Landlord and commercial surveys in Whitehill
Letting agents can arrange access with tenants, at a time agreed ahead of time. We survey on any day of the week, which helps when tenants work during the week.
Managing agents and residents’ management companies use roof surveys to plan maintenance. The report sets out what needs attention now and what can wait, which helps when budgeting.
