Roof surveys for homes and businesses in Fields End
Our roof surveys cover Fields End and the wider South East. Visits run on weekdays and at weekends. We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance. You get a written report by email, with photos and clear recommendations. Houses, flats and commercial buildings all follow the same careful process. To arrange a survey, call 07833 053749 or email us. Typical surveys look at worn lead at chimneys and abutments and cracked mortar along the ridge, on the roof space, lead flashings and clay and concrete tiles.
Older buildings in small places like Fields End may be listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials can be used when work is done, so check with the council before planning anything. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Where a building is listed, matching the existing roof materials is frequently expected.
How fast the report arrives depends on the package: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

Practical tips
A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They apply to most roofs:
- Find records of any re-roofing or repairs
- Check the roof from ground level after storms
- Mention any damp patches when booking
- Clear the loft hatch area before we arrive
Your report arrives by email, with photographs of what we found. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium. Each finding is set out in plain English, with recommendations.
Have the roof surveyed every few years, and after major storms. Regular checks catch problems while they’re small. Compare each report with the last.
Why it’s worth a survey now in Fields End
Without a survey, you are guessing at what the roof needs. That can lead to the wrong work being done, or to a real problem being missed. We tell you what’s really needed. Older cottages and farmhouses around Fields End can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it is left.
Roof survey starts from £150, including VAT. The final price depends on the size and height of the roof, access and the package you choose.

Roof surveys in Fields End: local notes
Older houses in the South East frequently have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles, and flat-roofed additions turn up almost everywhere. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look. Older buildings may be listed or sit in a conservation area. To find out, check Historic England’s list and ask the council about conservation areas. In either case, a change of roofing material may need consent.
If you own a rental within reach of Hemel Hempstead station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at. Living close to Gadebridge Park is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall. For site and facilities teams at buildings like John F Kennedy Catholic School, large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other.

The survey, step by step
Photos are taken throughout the visit, so the report shows exactly what we saw. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available. A typical visit takes about one to two hours for a house, and more on a big or complicated roof. For a village or hamlet like Fields End, the journey is planned ahead of time: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.
- We start with the property details and any concerns.
- A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday.
- Outside, we inspect from ground level, windows and other safe vantage points, and from the roof where safe.
- Inside, we check the roof space where there is safe access.
- We email a written report with photos and recommendations.
Before we arrive
- If you are buying, let the agent know when we’re coming
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
- Leave a clear route to the loft
Getting a price
If you are buying, it helps to book soon after your offer is accepted, so there is time to use the report before exchange. For any other survey, just call 07833 053749 or send us an email when you’re ready.

How the survey changes by roof type
Chimney stacks
Damp on a chimney breast inside often starts with the stack outside. We check the flashings and mortar for the cause.
Flat roof coverings
Repeated coatings can hide what’s underneath. We say what we can see and when a closer look would need opening up.

Fields End questions
Is my home in Fields End listed or in a conservation area?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.
I let a flat near Hemel Hempstead station. Can you check the roof?
Of course. We just need to know who will give access, and we can send the report to you or your agent.
Does a roof survey replace a structural engineer?
No. Where we see something that needs a structural engineer, the report says so. We don’t provide structural calculations.
Can you check whether my roof contains asbestos?
No. Buildings built or refurbished before 2000 may contain asbestos. Our report notes any materials that might, and recommends a specialist asbestos surveyor looks at them.
When will the report arrive?
Premium reports arrive the same day, Standard within 24 to 48 hours and Basic within 48 hours. Each report includes photos.
Do I need to be at home?
If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. We will talk about access as you book.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.
Landlords, agents and block managers in Fields End
Any of our surveys can be booked by landlords, agents and building managers in Fields End. For a price for a let property or a block, call 07833 053749 or email us.
Businesses and commercial landlords can book us too. Bigger roofs take more time, and they’re priced for the size.
Can I check my roof myself?
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
