How a roof survey works in Kemprow

Across London and the South East, roofs differ widely. If your home is a Victorian terrace, it may have Welsh slate, a butterfly roof and parapet gutters, and many post-war homes have concrete interlocking tiles instead. We adapt the survey to the roof in front of us. Older tiled homes may have clay plain tiles, and many homes have a flat-roofed extension too. Every part gets the attention it needs. If you’ve noticed loose ridge or hip tiles and torn or sagging underlay, we can find out what’s behind it, on flat roofs, the roof space and natural slate alike.

Older buildings in small places like Kemprow may be listed or in a conservation area. If yours is, re-roofing in different materials may need consent, so the council is the place to check. Knowing the roof’s condition helps you plan ahead with that in mind. Older materials like clay tiles, slate and stone are frequently matched when work is done.

You receive the findings by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

Tips from our surveys

Most of what helps is simple and safe from ground level. A few suggestions:

  • Move stored items away from the loft hatch
  • Check the roof from ground level after storms
  • Find records of any re-roofing or repairs
  • Ask about a flat roof on an extension or garage too

Any roofer you ask to quote can work from the report. They’ll see each defect and its location, which makes quotes easier to compare.

Plan a roof survey every few years, or sooner after severe weather. Routine surveys pick up wear before it leaks. Compare each report with the last.

How the survey works

Before we start, let us know why you’ve booked: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. That way we can focus on what matters to you. The visit usually takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, depending on how many separate roofs there are. Rural addresses near Kemprow can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.

  1. We start by hearing what you’d like checked and why.
  2. We agree a date, on a weekday, Saturday or Sunday.
  3. We check the roof from every safe vantage point, inside and out.
  4. Slates or tiles, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters are all examined and photographed.
  5. You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.

Advice

Roof surveys in Kemprow: local notes

Kemprow is about 2 miles from Elstree Aerodrome. If the drone is used for your survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying. The wider area around Kemprow has a long history of building, with High Elms Manor about 2.7 miles north-west. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.

If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for example near Harlequin Centre, a written record of the roof’s condition helps you plan maintenance rather than react to leaks. If you look after a building like Fair Field Junior School, its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale. If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near St John, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look.

Kemprow is about 3 miles north of Bushey, in Hertfordshire. Surveys in Kemprow work the same way as everywhere we cover: a careful inspection, photographs and a written report. Our Hertfordshire coverage includes Kemprow and the places around it. Our London page covers surveys nearby.

Different roofs, different checks

Natural slate

From the loft, we look at the underside of a slate roof. Older roofs may have bitumen felt underlay, and very old roofs none, and we note its condition.

Clay plain and peg tiles

Handmade and machine-made clay tiles are long-lasting. We check for cracked, slipped and missing tiles, and for spalling where the surface has flaked.

Can I check my roof myself?

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it.

What you cannot do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That is where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.

Why act early in Kemprow

Many roofs go years without anyone looking at them closely. Our report gives you a record of how the roof is today, which makes later changes easy to spot. Outbuildings and barns around Kemprow are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. A quick look before winter can save a lot.

Simple, low roofs take less time to survey than tall or complicated ones, and the package you pick makes a difference too. We will give you the figure before anything is booked.

Kemprow: your questions answered

I let a flat near Radlett station. Can you check the roof?

Yes, landlords and agents book with us as well as owners. You can ring 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and some details.

Is drone flying allowed in Kemprow?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Elstree Aerodrome is about 2 miles away, so we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before any flight. A small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, though the rest of the survey goes ahead either way.

Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?

Visits run seven days a week in the daytime, which suits people who work during the week. Let us know your preferred days when you book.

What if it rains on the day?

A survey can normally go ahead in light rain. Heavy rain or strong wind can ground a drone and make the roof unsafe, so we will agree a new date if the weather isn’t suitable.

Does this replace a RICS home survey?

No. We’re experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.

Do you inspect the roof from on top?

Only when it’s safe. Many roofs can be seen well from windows, vantage points and the loft, and Premium includes a drone where it applies.

Are you insured?

We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance.
